Highly. Hayao Miyazaki spent 12 years (from 1982 to 1994) on that manga series. A volume of 7 wonderful mangas. It was only one of his colleagues recommended him to take part of his manga and converted it to the movie so Miyazaki is not very content about the movie. The manga also discuss more topics on technology, human nature, peace, life itself, environmental protection/development and a lot more topics. But I have remind you, the manga also has a darker nature but still you need to read it or you'll missing out a lot.

The anime is amazing, but the manga is just on a completely different level of awesome. Also happens to be one of the few mangas actually done by Miyazaki.
