The Kori Bustard's name literally means "Bird That Walks". It can fly, but chooses to walk instead.ΒIt is known to be worlds heaviest flying bird. So the name sort of makes sense.Β

Whoaaaa! I've never heard of any bird choosing to walk instead of fly! Is it because it's so heavy that it takes up so much energy to fly? What do they eat?

I think it's not because they are too heavy to lift themselves. If that was the case, they wouldn't fly at all. I think it's just that they choose to stay on the ground, because that's where all their favorite foods are. They can eat all sorts of insects, rodents, reptiles, even amphibians like frogs.Β
They have been known to weigh, up to 30 - 40lbs. That's why they have been given the title as the heaviest flighted bird in the world. They do fly when the feel an immediate danger approaching. It's the quickest way to escape.Β
