Assignment Details

Project Objective: Research a famous artist and create a design for a sculpture that emulates his or her style.

Limitations: Sculpture must be made of cardboard. Other resources are permitted if they are hidden in the final piece, and brown grocery bags allowed instead of stripping the cardboard for paper (too time-consuming). Color is not allowed besides the original brown of the cardboard or paper bags.

Description

The artist I chose was Alphonse Mucha . Mucha is one of the main artists from the Art Nouveau movement. My aim here was to reproduce the organic, flowing lines and nature theme that you would see in Mucha's and other Art Nouveau artists' work.

My original concept was a birdcage, but it seemed to be too complex of an idea for cardboard so I simplified it to a perch. My attempts to make a decent bird out of cardboard failed (time constraints). A classmate and I were chatting about a butterfly design, so that inspired me to nix the bird and use a butterfly instead. I figured that it would be a good opportunity to do a papercutting and get bonus points for detail.

I had originally created the frame with cardboard, but it was too flimsy so I used foam board. I used wire and aluminum mesh to create shape over the frame, then I did grocery-bag papier-mache over that. The butterfly and flowers are cut from grocery bags also. There's a slim piece of cardboard glued to the butterfly to keep the wings up, and that's the only piece of cardboard in the entire thing. It is 18 inches tall and 14 inches wide; the flowers are each four inches wide; the butterfly is five inches at its longest section. I had a week and a half to make it, probably spent a good three days of it messing with cardboard before I figured out what to do.

This is my first attempt at something three-dimensional, and it was definitely an interesting experience. I caught whooping cough the weekend before it was due, but I still stayed up all day and night ripping my hands to shreds on the edges of the wire mesh that I was super-failing at figuring out how the heck it's supposed to be used. It was frustrating, but worth it (I think). Anyway, I got an A!
