Description So just to get into the holiday spirit, here's some concept art for one of the villains for my planned comic "You The Living," the Lord of the Underworld Erlik. I don't know if this is how I'll portray him in the final comic though...of course, any suggestions for a design change are very welcome! I feel like he looks waaaay to much like one of the thousands of cloaked malevolent spirits running around in every genera...I also want his role in the story to be a bit of a surprise, so for the time being you get the traditional myth about him, brought to us by Dr Anthony E. Smart:

Erlik is the Siberian spirit of evil. The Altaic Tartars speak of his birth thus: once Ulgan saw a piece of mud with human features floating on the ocean. The high god gave a spirit to it, and named the creature Erlik. But the friendship of Ulgan and Erlik did not last long, for the pride of the latter obliged his banishment to the depths, where he became the lord of the dead. Erlik claimed the dead as his own, leaving the living to Ulgan. When the creator commanded the first man to bring up a piece of earth from the depths of the primeval ocean, Erlik hid a piece in his mouth, hoping to create a world of his own. When it started to expand though, like the piece Ulgan threw on the surface of the water, the evil spirit was almost choked. Seeing Erlik's plan, Ulgan commanded him to spit out the earth, which he did: it became marshlands.

The Altaic Tartars ascribe the creation of man to Erlik, relating how, when a demiurge had created the first human beings, he found it impossible to give them a life-giving soul. He therefore ascended to seek the help of Kudai, the supreme god, and while he was gone he left a naked dog watching over his creation. Erlik approached the dog and offered to give it a coat of golden hair in return for the 'soulless ones'. The dog agreed, and Erlik spat on the half-finished humans, then left. When the demiurge returned with the souls and saw what Erlik had done, he turned the bodies inside out, and this is why we have spittle in our intestines.

Erlik also killed the messenger Maidere of the god and taught the people the ways of sin. He often assumes the shape of a bear.

Holy scheiss, MAX! How are YOU doing?! Things are good but busy over at my end; I got into grad school and am super excited for all of that to start . Less time for arts, perhaps, but I'm REALLY looking forward to studying what I want to. What about yourself? Also, thanks for your nice words on this old piece!

Oh my what a delicious antagonist this guy is. I absolutely adore your illustration for his hood and visage. Both splendid and brilliant! I cannot wait to see more of this comic!

Thank you kindly Sketch! I'm still fiddling with Erlik's design, but hopefully 2014 will see more of this bugger...and thanks also for your encouragement

Coooooooool!!! I like it!! Even with the floating black sinister heart piece. And his freaky glimmering light where his face should be!!
I suppose if you wanted a little bit of thoughtful input into perhaps spiffing up his design a little, you could give his outfit slightly bear- like features, seeing as he can shape shift into one. Like patches of fur or ends of bear paws and claws dangling off the robe. Just a thought, of course. It's still an awesome design!!

Ha! I was actually thinking of deep-sea predators and the "light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel narratives when I tried that out, but I'm glad you think it works
That's actually a really good idea! I actually have been wanting to give him more in way of ornamentation, but wanted the sense of threat to be very present as well...putting bear claws in some sort of ornate piece could be just the thing. Thanks a ton for the concept, and I'm going to give him a makeover right away to try it out!

Creates a really eerie focal point for the character!!!
You're welcome!! Go and make him look even more epically awesome!! XD I wait to see how he's gonna look!!!

He's going to look fabulous!!!!...Although in foresight that's probably not what I want to aim for when designing a look for a god of death . And thanks again for the suggestion . My main problem now is trying to balance out symbols how human power and wealth with bits of animals associated with predators...I want him to have a mix, although with an emphasis on culturally construed signs of power...of course, many cultures use pieces of animals to designate power and status...and sorry for my rambling (X_X)

Aw cor, thanks a ton dude! I'm still not sure though...I'm kind of considering giving him a mask that usually covers his "(predatory) light at the end of the tunnel" face...what do you think?

You think you might want to try out mini-comics in this world soon? I'll be done with some tests soon, so should have time shortly! If not, no worries.
