I can't help but laugh at this every time I see it.

It was born as a happy thought meant to bring me more cheer on the afternoon walk. Malicious graphic jabs are usually unfunny by their nature alone.

It would probably be really taboo in real life to go after someone crusading as a feminist and standing up for social justice but thankfully on the internet it's taken far less seriously and and unfortunately for Tom Preston, his opponents are able to do proper research to debunk his claims.

It's not like he has any other performance ground to stand up for fight against inequality and discrimation - that is, assuming that he REALLY means it and it isn't just a 'clever' attempt at giving meaning to his online PR disasters - people who have met him in real life remarked on his inability to communicate under pressure.
"grumble - grumble" doesn't sound like a catchy manifesto to rally crowds with.

Art is a great way to spread a message but the say he does it doesn't work either. His comics are as subtle as a propaganda poster but without any of the artistic merit. His targets don't help either. While it's generally not the best idea in the world to have cartoon characters carry out your political battles, cartoonists like Disney and Dr Seuss who both did anti-Nazi propaganda during World War II have shown that it could be a viable tactic to getting people to agree with your position.
But having a blue bear beat someone up with a baseball bad because he was taking pictures of a reluctant Power Girl cosplayer or using a cartoon pirate to stand up for gay rights after shouting out "LESBIAN KICK!" is not the way to go. It makes your side look absolutely foolish and the fact that you pick on such small targets (at least in the case of the first one) makes your position seem unimportant. People are kind of assholes in comic-cons. What a way to justify the continued existence of feminism in the first world!

Not sure what shield he is holding? His art or 'the internet'?

I tried to conceptualize a shield tailored for an all-purpose strawman social justice warrior, but I had nothing in the ways of elaborate ideas and only a single hour for entire design process.
Maybe on another go... but I sincerely hope that there will be no need for more finger pointing. I really want him to crawl out of his shallow grave, not dig it deeper.
