Description This is a character plate for my version of Dorothy Gale and Toto. I've been working on Illustrative development for this book just to keep myself motivated and working. I had to do some research first from Baum's own descriptions and also some online and library research to figure out what prairie girls like Dorothy would have worn in Kansas in the mid 1880's. In my sketchbook I did a front and side orthographic head drawing for her and the rest I just drew after studying reference. I am working on my version of Scarecrow right now and I hope to post it up here soon. I will be doing a character plate for each character in the book. Simultaneously, I will also be working on some full Illustrations for specific scenes. This is Watercolor, Walnut ink wash and pen and ink on Arches 140 pound Hot Press Watercolor Block roughly 14" x 10". I do all my under-drawing in Col-Erase Tuscan Red (my favorite color ) Thanks for looking.

She's beautiful. I love the swirls of her hair and the draping/detail of her dress.

This is gorgeous and wonderfully accurate! I agree with Rachel that her face looks a little pinched, but overall this is great. I'm so impressed!

It's funny what you come across on your daily dA rounds. I saw this in ImagineFX a while ago. When so much of today's illustration is done digitally it is nice to see someone working so expertly in traditional media.

I really like the style you've used here, the line work is beautiful and really adds depth to the illustration. The colours are wonderfully subtle and work very well and this definitely reminds me of the golden age of illustration. It looks like you've found a style which really suits you

lol, Yeah Ruby Slippers are MGM's intellectual property. They changed them to ruby because they wanted to wow the audience in Technicolor.

This is absolutely beautiful! Much closer to the book than most depictions of Dorothy. I love that she's wearing the original silver shoes instead of the ruby slippers from the movie. She's even got her pink bonnet! Toto looks great. Just all-round lovely. The only thing I might change is her face.. I'm not sure about her expression and her mouth seems a little small. Other than that, I just love it. Well done!
