This was meant to be an entry for a contest, until I realised the stock I was using is not permitted on the site I was planning on posting it on. So now its kind of just a useless piece -shrugs-. But hey, on the bright side ... I actually finished something! Click on download for full size and details.

As lovely as the overall piece is, I can't help but immediately notice the lighting. I'll try and explain this in the least rude way possible (not that I'm rude, my fingers just have strange ways of translating my brain that can sometimes come across badly).
The natural source of light for the background image is coming from what I believe would be the front right side (not over the photographer's shoulder but beside it, in a sense?). However the lighting on the horse is coming from the opposite and it's quite off-putting, making the eye unsure of where to really look; the light on the horse should realistically match the direction of the background, not oppose it. The other big part of this though, is all that light reflecting off the water isn't giving off any glimmering light onto the horse like it feels like it should. The lack of natural and reflected light on the legs, neck and face, make it look like the horse should be further back, blending into the shadows of the background. Even adding a highlight to the eye would help make it pop a little more and break through that dark blending. Now I can see the faint lights in the mane and tail -and this has to do with the opposing light directions - I feel as though they're lacking the texture they could have if highlighted more in the background light's direction.
Lighting is a pain, and seems to be one of the main things us manipulators have the most issues with. I hope what I've written has/can help a bit ^^
