Description Nova is one of those characters that I feel really haven't been used to their potential. I came across Nova very shortly after I first came across Spider-Man, and both remain favorite characters of mine to this day.

Here's a guy called the "human rocket"-- of COURSE a four-year-old would love that idea. I enjoyed his original series, and when he reappeared years later in New Warriors? I was in heaven. Sure, he wasn't acting like "Peter Parker lite" in that book, but it was NOVA! When he put on his original outfit 8 or so issues in, I was ecstatic. That blue and gold ensemble just looks so freakin' cool.

Before long, he had a short 90s series. I missed all of that. A few years ago, though, I picked up an issue in a 25 cent box... and I wasn't impressed. THAT was the epitome of the bad 90s comic, not Image. At least at Image, there were some fun series with some skill level involved. On Nova, it was just a horrid mess with a mulleted hero and gritted teeth.

Flash forward to the Erik Larsen-penned Nova series-- what was that , 1998? 2000? Somewhere around there. I really enjoyed that. Classic Nova, although most of the artwork from whoever it was ended up being a huge step UP, but not really BRILLIANT. I think an Erik Larsen-drawn Nova would have been cool, especially with his action-packed scripts.

Oh, and what do I think of the new uniform he's sporting in the current series? Meh. The plot tries to explain it, and I like the hook of the series for the most part... but it's yet another Marvel character whose uniform has been overcomplicated with "stuff" and seams. Geez, people-- I don't notice YOUR seams even up CLOSE and yet every superhero on the market has an outfit with seams more prominent than their logos. Ugh. Nice seeing Nova back, though.

I'm currently scrounging through dealer booths at cons for the back issues of his original series. It's been a lot of fun reading the issues I never had the chance to as a child.

So, Nova-- you've had a rocky history with some great moments and... well, some periods where you had a campy, poorly-drawn mullet. Here's hoping the best for your future as you rocket through the skies of the Marvel Universe.

I like the new and old uniforms the new uniform does seem more like the modern ideal of a galactic defender rather than an earthian teen super hero. but your Concept work on the character is cool it almost reminds me of the Spidergirl mc2 nova. He sports the original uniform and frequently works with a grown up speed ball. Which rocks.
to bad the regular marvel continuity's speedball is the overly "dark" penance now.
I swear marvel and DC just have this thing for taking all the fun out of lighthearted sarcastic characters like kidflash and speedball.

I agree!

There seems to be a fascination among certain comic writers with perverting any character they don't understand. Really, they've corrupted so many characters now, who's left to balance out the equation? If EVERYONE is grim n' gritty, then they'll have to be MORE absurdly grim to show it.

Geez, leave the boy scouts alone, jaded creators-- they not only serve a role, they make us all look good.

agreed. Thars kind of why everyones beating Bendis' door down being all "where did logans libido go too?" I mean certain characters are supposed to be badass and hordcore all the time and others are normal people who experience the whole spectrum.
Thank God they havn't messed with Ice-Man or the Human Torch. I don't know what i'd do without the levity they bring to a comic.

Hehehe I felt like Iceman lost a lot for awhile when his powers went all crazy on him-- he became this emo farce of what he originally was. Eh, he's mostly back to his core self now, I understand.

agreed. I always liked the goofy brother like dynamic he had with arch angel. Especially in the champions. But I think I'm the only guy in the world who liked that series lol.

lmao yeah I am a big defenders fan but was sad when they just kind of faded into obscurity. I oloved everyone on the champions team except black widow...I loathe the black widow. I honestly don't know anyone who says "hey you know who we should throw in here? The Black widow!" I would have much rather seen someone like captain marvel lead the champions but hey whats done is done. Plus the Defenders and Champions both had BLACK GOLIATH lmao

I was just sketching some Rich Rider pics the other day! My first memory of him was from the How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way! The create a cover section had me curious. Loved the New Warriors for the first couple of years, largely because of Nova. Got a few of the Erik Larsen issues, (Joe Bennett it believe was the artist on it... seen recently in 52.)

Love your take on him. He will be one to watch this year...!

That's right, Bennett! I can't believe I forgot that. He did alright, just not as well as I hoped he would.

He predates the existence of Cannonball, though they both played the same basic role on each's respective team (the New Warriors and X-Force). I always liked when the crossed over.

He's on the way back this year if Wizard is to be believed.

With his mini and his new regular, I wouldn't be surprised! He's sort of heading the new push on Marvel's space-oriented characters.
