So you might have heard the controversery going around about Ghost In the Shell and Scarlett Johanson. I decided to try something out. Honestly I love Scarlett Johanson and I think she's absolutely beautiful. I think she'll be fine play the role of Matoko Kusanagi. I just hope they tell the story well! Anyway, for this picture, I thought id try my hand at a paint over. Think it needs a lot of work, but I just needed to do something. The background is not mine, that is directly from the teaser screen cap from the live action.ΒRelated content

I totally get the frustration, like me being African american, I mean c'mon, Gods of Egypt....being load I've ever seen well not seen I did not waste a ticket on that shit, and while I love Scarlett Johannesen too but they should have went with a Japanese Actress. Β Like I could see if the lead character's name was an american name or a European name but it's not, meaning clearly that she was meant to be Japanese. I think Scarlett, while not the right choice, well do fine as far as acting.
Now on to the art, this is amazing, well and truly.

Did you also have a problem with Japanese actor portraying white characters in the Attack on Titan live-action? How about Idris Elba playingΒ Heimdall, a viking?
When you ignore the racial "controversy", Gods of Egypt was a pretty fun movie. I don't expect anime live-actions to be like the anime, so I have fun watching those too (with some exception, ahem, DBZ...)

I'm not saying It'll be bad, on the contrary, I really like Scarlett, and I think she'll do great, like i said, I understand the frustration.Β
and to be honest, and I know it's a double standard, but in the case of Attack on Titan, it was made in Japan, I didn't expect them to grab White Actors, doesn't make it right, but it is what it is.
If it was a Hollywood making that movie, then yea, I would expect them to have white Actors, with the exception of Mikasa...for obvious reasons.Β
Heimdall, I get it but in that case, They aren't "Viking" not in the Marvel Universe anyway, if it was a movie about Norse Mythology, then yea, he totally should have been white, hands down.Β
Β But don't get me wrong, I get it, I really do, maybe he should have been white.Β God of Egypt, no one was Egyptian, they didn't have to be "Black" per say but they weren't even Egyptian.
Like I would have been okay if they had one of them being white, or maybe that mortal character could have been white, I would have been fine with that, changing one character, imo, is fine, not the whole cast.Β

Β I wonder why it's so controversial. We're in America, so there are few Japanese people to begin with, let alone actors. Take into account Hollywood has to choose a well known actress in order to appeal to a large audience, as the people who enjoy anime or Japanese culture are small. These people still have to make money. If they tried to make Scarlet look Asian, there would be an outcry that it's racist as well.
Β I'm sorry, but this movie is about a cyborg, not a human. Top that off, isn't it racist to keep grouping Americans by their ancestor's heritage? What makes one Japanese in Japan is being a citizen, no matter what you look like. Why isn't that the same in America? It doesn't matter if someone is of Japanese, European, African, or of whatever decent if you're an AMERICAN citizen playing a JAPANESE character, you're not the Japanese citizen in this anime.

Because the main character in the show is Asian and Hollywood has a long history of white washing and casting white actors for non-white roles. Minorities are already under represented and white washing just makes it worse

Your forgetting about the fact that the Major we see isn't even her real body. They live in a universe where anyone can literally look like whatever they want to. She's been shown to use many bodies throughout the franchise.

That reminded me, I think it's gits 1 there is a episode with oragami cranes. You see kid kusinagi. She is Asian girl. But after that there is no mention of her past. Only that roe the guy their after is the boy from the hospital another survivor of the plane crash.

This is a gorgeous retouch. I love the texture of the face.
And imho it really has nothing to do with whether Johanson is qualified for the role or not. It was never her role to be qualified for in the first place. Like, it's not some statement of dislike against Johanson to think that the lead role of a Japanese cult classic should go to someone Japanese.

I'm not saying there are no good Japanese actresses, but it's also ridiculous to think that we should exclude certain actors because of race is ridiculous too. Remember how people were defending Michael B Jordan as the Human Torch? Or how no one complained in the old Daredevil movie when Kingpin was black? Or how Electro in Amazing Spiderman 2 was black?
These people portrayed white characters despite being of other races, but they were chosen presumably because they were right for the part, most of them even did a pretty good job (Michael B Jordan was pretty much the only good thing about Fant4stic)

Yes, the fans were complaining, but all the major outlets were praising the decision. Plus, the fan complaints died out around the time trailers actually started coming out.
And yeah, that does speak to me. You know what it says? It says that society is in a sad state when time is being taken away from things that matter in terms of accuracy (story, character personality, etc) in favor of pandering to people who only seem to care about how white she looks.

Yes, there are plenty of Asian actresses, but do any of them come close to Scarlett in terms of star power? No. If anything, she's in this movie for the star power.
I don't want something that ignores source material, but I can make exceptions for things lika a character's race if their personality and story is left in tact. There were far more problems with DBE than Goku being white. And GITS has already surpassed DBE by having an actress who's actually talented.
Sure, we can accept that a man can dress up in a bat suit and fight crime, an alcoholic can pilot a suit of high tech armor, a talking raccoon and tree can be best friends, a man can turn into a giant green rage monster, and that people will choose to use laser swords in a world where long range laser guns exist, but a white girl named Makoto? Let me put your mind at ease. Yes, I would feel the same way. I want the person who will portray the character's personality the best. If that means their race has to be changed, fine.
