? The Major is Asian but she has a Caucasian looking cyborg body (specially in the first movie). In Japan the casting did not cause any controversy at all. In fact the original creators of the films and the series are quite happy about it...

The PRODUCER was okay with it (gee...someone that stands to profit...what a shocker). Furthermore, people will latch onto ANY excuse to get away from casting an Asian (Japanese) lead in Hollywood (this goes double for female Asian leads).
Also, so *what* if there wasn't an uproar in Japan? There are actual Asian/Asiatic-descended actors trying to break into the big time in *my* country.
On top of all that, there was talk of experimenting with cosmetic measures to make ScarJo look more Japanese. How about the fact that her character's mother IS Japanese?

Let preface my message by saying that I hate the ScarJo casting, and wish they had gone with an actor of Japanese descent. That being said...
1. Why do you draw the line at Asian vs Caucasian? If they cast a Korean actress, would it bother you that she was playing a Japanese role? Would you be as mad if you found out ScarJo was half Japanese, but looked 100% white? What if she was 1/64th Japanese? I understand your point about wanting fair representation in movies, and Hollywood's whitewashing is out of control. But unfortunately, that argument can go both ways.
2. This isn't racist. It's capitalism, friend. Hollywood makes movies for China now, it's their #1 market. You know what the Chinese love? American celebrities. Casting ScarJo in the lead provides star power, and opens the film up to a larger audience. They appease their coveted Chinese audience, and Americans gain interest in a movie they might have skipped otherwise. (Seriously, go ask people walking out of an Avengers movie if they know what GITS is.)
Again, I don't agree with it. I hate Hollywood's constant (and historied) whitewashing. I would have loved for Motoko to be cast with a more appropriate actress. But you shouldn't be surprised, and unleashing your rage on deviantArt is misplaced.

LOL... This is not "damage control". I actually would have preferred Rinko Kikuchi as the Major. However, I have not problem with them casting a caucasian actress since Mokoto's body is entirely artificial (as anybody who has seen ANY of the series or movies of GITS know), so she can have any appearance she wants, either male, female, child, adult, asian, caucasian, etc. Me and a lot of Japanese fans understand this... why can't you?

Yeah yeah, I heard that horseshit before. Yet another reason to duck from casting an Asian (female) lead in a film...especially one that doesn't typecast them as a martial artist.
The only consolation here is that ethnic demographics are going to shift from the current Caucasian/white majority and people aren't going to be so uptight about a non-Caucasian/white lead in a Hollywood film.

Yukata Izumihara is playing Saito.

As I said before, Pilou Asbaek is playing Batou, Takeshi Kitano is playing Aramaki, and Lasarus Ratuere is playing Ishikawa.
And Saito is in this movie, played by Yukata Izumihara.

I was sceptical when I heard they were doing a live action remake of GITS, but seeing this picture and how well miss Johansson looks in the majors boots make me rethink things.
