Description Ah, so you thought I would only do his eyes and dog tag, eh? Well for better or worse, here he is with the inside of his ears, eyes, and collar colored in, with the rest B&W of course. I mainly wanted to try this because A) I thought it would be something different and slightly more challenging, and B) His signature gold(ish) dog tag is cut off in this frame of the movie, lol. Also, if you notice something else that's a bit "different" about him, that is because I played around with some HDR settings and such, which gives him this somewhat edgy and darker look. I don't know though, I'm still deciding whether or not to do any more like this, as it is a slight departure from the "norm" you'd normally expect from me. So, please feel free to give me your honest input on what you all think, and have a great week everyone!

I never thought of this before but it's crazy how detailed Bolt's face is. It must have taken ages to render his hundreds of thousands of hairs. I'd say that Bolt still matches most modern CGI's in terms of model fidelity, despite being like 5 years old.

Anyway, regarding your new style. Firstly, absolutely love what you did with his hairs - I think you should do that with all images from now on^^
I noticed that the filter looked a bit darker and contrasty than usual but I got to say I really like it. It really works with his intent profile.

You're absolutely right, his model is particularly amazing even today, and I feel that I appreciate it almost more with an edit such as this.  Ah, to think of what this movie could've been if things were done differently... *sigh*

And thank you for the vote of confidence; I shall try my best to get some more done this way, as the settings were a bit strange for this one!

What do you mean with "could have been?". Just curious^^

Also, I really think it works for this picture. The only problem is that some of the shadowy areas over Bolt's nose looks a bit grainy.

Could've been; as in if the marketing/advertising would have been better, if they had more time, if Disney knew what an incredible character they had created and had pushed for "more", etc...

Oh, and I agree about the slight graininess on certain areas of the nose.  A side-effect of pushing particular contrast levels too high I suppose...

I don't know if you've maybe read my journal or if we're soulmates or something but that's EXACTLY how I feel about Bolt. Bolt's character development had so much potential that was partly overshadowed by comic relief pigeons and Rhino's razzle dazzle. In fact, that's pretty much what Byron Howard answered when I emailed him about it. (Great guy btw)

Yep, that's exactly it. So true indeed, and Byron really does seem like a great guy. (I still remember the email you forwarded me, that was cool!)

Challenge: How about giving Mittens and Rhino a try. Mittens is still mostly back and white so she might be somewhat similar to Bolt, but Rhino is brown, so he might be a lot harder for you.

Oh I have another challenge!

What about adding some blur filters to soften the background a bit? It'd really make the characters in the foreground stand out! Actually, just blurring the background can really increase the intensity of an image.

It's kind of difficult to properly outline the background though, but give it a shot

Oh goodie, another challenge!  Sounds like fun; looks like I''ll have to dust off some PhotoShop skills I learned last semester for this one, lol.

Yea, after I did this one, I was actually thinking about doing just that!  And I agree that Rhino might be a bit more difficult, as the brown fur may not be as "contrasty" as Mittens or Bolt, along with other possible unforeseen technical challenges.  Appreciate the suggestions, and challenge accepted.

It looks awesome! It's a nice change of pace, and different is almost always good. I'd recommend trying new things whenever you can. Not only will you keep getting better the more you challenge yourself, but you may even find a style you like even more. Keep up the great work.

Dat shading! This really makes a great Bolt screenshot. Good work!

Thank you very much!  Yea, it is pretty different, but I think the HDR tweaks are somewhat growing on me now.  Oh, and what do you think of his ears and collar being in color?  Too much/distracting, or actually better?  I'm still debating...

I think it looks great like that. :3

Alrighty then, I shall try to do more of these from time to time, depending on the screenshot.  And it's kinda funny too that every time this pic loads up in front of me, I'm all like "WHOA!!!" and thrown back a bit, probably because of the style and perspective, lol.  Ah Bolty, when are we ever going to have enough of you...
