Hey Lady Falcon Thank you for the explanation. I love folklore but my knowledge is mostly west and northern European. Kupala Night reminds me of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream - young lovers getting up to romantic confusion in the woods! In Britain, Beltaine (1st of May) is when young people usually go off into the woods for fertility rites!

Well, it's kind of connected with Kupala's Night en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kupala_N…

In this picture I illustraited one of the rites... Girls put their garlands on the surface of the river and it should float. I don't remember exactly(whether it should drown in the end or just continue floating) but in this way they tell their own fortune about marriage and finding fiance.
