Description I keep feeling this is incomplete, that there needs to be something in that white space, but I can't figure out what! It feels so cluttered already, adding something would take your focus off the main subject... Maybe it just needs color? I dunno...

This came from a monster I wrote in a little snippet I did a while back. She lures her prey in with the beautiful fairy woman and then she swallows them in her giant flytrap mouth.

Self Posting because I want to keep this advice:

Pros: Your composition over all is not to bad, you have some nice flow and fluidity but it is not without it's problems. I can tell that you did this piece with some care which is always a good sign. Your concept is also a strong aspect. Lastly your level is detail is good and appropriate.

Cons:First thing that jumps out at me is that you are in you transitional period from line work to rendering and jumping to form. I recognize this because I went through it myself. I feel that you are relying heavily on line to define your form but looks like you are trying to make the jump to something more high rendered. It is perfectly fine to combine both line and high render, but when you do, it is wise to be light and more delicate with your linework, right now it is very heavy handed and looks like you keep going back to redefine the line making it darker and darker. Start off lightly and build up don't be in a rush. The one thing about your line work is that it does have variation of weight which is a good sign. Now when it comes to the rendering part, it looks like you are shading in a general volume and then smuging it all over to give it a smooth look. That is a common mistake I think most artist do when they start to get into rendering. Shadows have shape and conform to the shape, they don't hover around the shape but they are actually part of the shape. If you ever seen the old school polygon character models for games, that is a good way to think of your shading planes. Start of shading that way with small transitions to make it feel unified. Also shadows have both hard and soft edges and so does light. Be selective in that plus look at references so you understand about how some surfaces react to light.

You are getting there and I know I can see that you are thinking about your art. Hope this helps and keep plugging away at it and you will get there.

That has to be some of the most impressive shading I've seen in a while and it's only strengthened by a very well drawn piece of art

I always enjoy work which is well shaded, I can't shade (never really caught on how to do it well) so when I see it done well, such as in your drawings I feel it needs commending

mabey if you just add color to the back round and leave the rest black and white might help it pop even more?

Maybe, that would help at least. I was thinking of going full color, using de-saturated colors along the borders and more vibrant colors on the woman and maybe using a mist effect to break up the solid background. Of course I'm incredibly slow at coloring...

Wow, at first I thought Xolotl was some internet thing (like LOL), but I looked it up and it's an Aztec god isn't it? The dark personification of Venus, in fact. Really cool!

I know! I adoreeee pitcher plants. They're so badass. "What? You like to nectar in my mouth? Well don't you perch on my mouth and -- oops! You hit the feelers, and now the top is closing and now you're going to drown. Warned you."

I LOVE IT.
