Love it! I'd be careful about selling that as a print though. That becomes a copyright lawsuit risk.

I'm aware. One of my art friends irl actually suggested it to me because she wants a print of it. I have never felt comfortable with the idea but I'm curious. I see people selling fan art all the time.

Yeah I see it too. Unfortunately a lot of people do it because others have gotten away with it, not because it's actually legal. I just wouldn't want to end up as one of the people who end up with the 'cease and desist' letter. It could be benign, simply asking that the piece be removed from sale, or it could be a full blown 'hey guess what you are gonna have to go to court and we are gonna take all your money.'
It can sometimes seem like a bit of a gray area, since most pieces that are sold are not copies of licensed work, but one can only go so far with the 'transformative work' loophole. Fanart is certainly a high form of praise for the original creation, but at the end of the day it is still making money off of someone else's idea when it is sold for profit, thus leaving the fan-artist at risk for lawsuit.Β
One can always look into the exact copyright specifications for the original creations, or the public statements from the creators about their preferences regarding the fanart issue. I just figure it's best to be aware of the risks and to take the time to consider the moral implications. And as always, stay safe on teh scary interwebz!

Posting the art online is still okay, it's just the making of profit that can get you in trouble. Fan art is still really great for getting exposure.Β

Yeah. I have read about it and big companies will generally leave you alone if you're making trivial money off of it. There are some artists who set up shop though and make a lot and then get hunted down for it.
