Description
One of the many applications for Emily's powers is flattening herself out into the rough shape of a wing suit or a kite and gliding. How she gets aloft is generally not the point, but she's gotten fairly good at floating around her city on just air currents.I wanted to try something new with this picture; a friend of mine recently did a drawing that helped me understand better how to achieve a comic book style that I have long coveted, and this was my first go at it. Probably not the best to try this with, because RB is mostly flat here, but a worthy attempt nonetheless.

She can! It's not something she's done often, but she is definitely capable of that. Most times that her making herself into a giant cushion would be useful are also times where making herself into a human trampoline is just as useful and a little easier; she habitually stretches herself flat instead of blowing herself up in most of those cases.

I love the way you've tackled drawing her hands. Also that she has her goggles down. The contours of her costume help play up her curves even though she's flattened. It looks like you've kept her legs separate? A very distinctive take on the idea.
(Funnily today I was working on a CrossLink story during which she makes a similar transformation.)

Glad you like her hands, I think with the particular way I tried to shade them those turned out as a surprising highlight of the picture. Her goggles are always up, I thought I'd do them differently since it seemed thematically appropriate for her while she's flying! And heh, playing up her curves is definitely a benefit of her suit. That said I didn't want her to just be a flat sheet, I wanted to portray her body being stretched out instead of her just becoming a shapeless sheet.

I noticed her upper torso still retains some three dimensionality and the hashing around her arms, etc. Trying to convey that sort of transition can be really challenging in a face-forward pose.

I'm glad it turned out as well as it did! You're absolutely right, it was super tough to try to portray her body still having some partial depth to it using only shading. I'll have to try to draw her smooshed and flattened out more often to keep refining how I do it.

I am loving the shape that feels weightless, rippling, and keeps her thriving. If Elastigirl and Bubblegum Jane have redefined the flying/gliding experience, so could the next ones like Rubber Bullette. I bet she could lengthen the tail end/legs to feel like a flying serpent. No prob, I’ll be wishing RB more gliding moments like this as we start the new year. Just realizing the out-stretching of her body to appear a little thicker than just nothing, good work in the leg separation, providing the true gliding, flying experience, while honoring the kite style form.

I am feeling much better! I have gotten through the worst of my cold and now I am feeling pretty good.

I realized something, I wonder if RB can lower her arm length and glide into the perspective of a paper airplane than a kite? In that way she can still fly upwards in the wind. If she is in a sugar glider parachute perspective, her momentum is flying in the same leverage but will eventually dwindle down the sky. I may be wrong, but she knows how to adjust taking flight and keeping her molecular structure soft with the suit.

RB definitely knows how to use heat updrafts and wind currents to sort of fly, and you're spot on about her changing her shape mid-air to achieve different results!

Her head would be basically the tip of the paper airplane. If she remolds herself into something much of a torpedoe, or an airplane with a needle shape on its nose, she could make faster momentum mid-air.

Hey, I love it when a face can be distorted for utility purposes. Take for example, the ghost couple of beetle juice, or Kim Possible’s Camille Leon (who does it in a teasing stretch/squash fashion).
