One thing I would suggest is using some different tones perhaps--it might just be my computer talking, but I'm having a little trouble focusing on Mario's face, for example, because the colours contrast sharply. Maybe darker noses/darker reds? I dunno (=

I say that your experiment went well. You manage a lack of black outlines and allowing the colors to contrast. I also dig those exaggerated noses.
