Description Trailer pumps were widely used during the Second World War. Unlike fire engines, the pumps could be easily maneuvered around the piles of rubble and deep craters caused by enemy bombing. This pump was supplied by the Home Office to the Ferranti factory in Hollinwood, Oldham in 1941 for firefighting duties.

Six fire crew operated the pump. One hose was used to suck water into the pump while the other sprayed water onto the fire. The pump could suck up and spray out 500 gallons of water a minute, enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in less than an hour.
