Description Salon carriage Sr 1 is known as the royal carriage of Queen Mother Anna Pavlovna, the Grand Duchess of Russia of origin, who herself insisted on building the (original) carriage.

On November 21, 1864, the unnumbered carriage was inspected and found to be in order. After that, it took several weeks before the ministerial approval came. During the winter the royal party preferred the warm hearth to a journey by only steam-heated train. Anna Pavlovna did not use the Sr 1 anymore. Before being commissioned, she died on March 1, 1865 after an illness of several weeks. After that, the carriage was regularly used by Prince Frederik, the younger brother of King Willem II.

The two-axle carriage was built for the broad gauge (1995 mm) used by the HSM. In 1864, the management of the HSM received permission to lay a second track in standard gauge (1435 mm) along the entire route from Amsterdam - Haarlem - The Hague - Rotterdam in addition to the wide-track single track in order to prevent the connection to the rest of Europe in the future. to miss. This single track was completed on 2 May 1866.

The body of the saloon carriage was then placed on a new three-axle chassis. For the first time, a new type of wheels was used, consisting of sixteen teak segments around a wrought iron hub, surrounded by a wrought iron wheel tyre, the Mansell system.

The number Sr 1 and the initials HSM did not get the carriage until 1970, when the connecting curve with the NRS lines was built in The Hague, and it was suspected that the carriage could be transported over foreign lines.

After Prince Frederik died in 1881 at the age of 84, the salon carriage was hardly used anymore. The HSM therefore gave the carriage a different destination in 1884. A section of a final compartment was separated, which was equipped with a private and a washing device. Instead of oil lighting, the carriage got gas lighting. The stoves were replaced by a heating system with briquettes. The carriage was then made available to people who could afford to escape the harsh Dutch winters. So VIP carriage 'avant la lettre'.

Queen Wilhelmina used the carriage one more time in 1905 for a visit to the province of Friesland.

In 1908 the Sr 1 was taken out of service and scrapped.

In 2009 the Railway Museum commissioned the firm Kloosterboer in Purmerend to build a replica of the Sr 1. The carriage, the construction of which was sponsored by the Bank-Giro-Loterij, played a leading role in the 'Royal Class' exhibition in 2010.
