Description The Gloster Meteor was not only the first jet aircraft to see squadron service with the RAF, but it was also the only Allied jet aircraft to see action in the Second World War. The first Meteor MkI was delivered to No. 616 Squadron on 12 July 1944, and their first operational sortie was on 27 July 1944. Their first successful interception of a V-1 was on 4 August 1944, when Flying Officer Dean, flying Meteor EE 216 used a wingtip to tip one over after his guns had jammed. The Meteor F8, a much-developed version of the earlier versions, entered service in June 1950, and the type finally disappeared from front-line fighter squadrons in 1957.
