Description Two CSX "Gevo" units haul autoracks over the spectacular curved bridge at Independence, Kentucky.

This stretch of the former L&N LCL Sub south of Cincinnati is a favorite locale of mine due to the many trains and impressive scenery. We spent an evening just photographing a few trains crossing this span, which was once used in Louisville & Nashville publicity photos. I have many shots worth posting, but I couldn't wait to show this one.

With my shoes off and resting on a large slab of rock with my feet in the water, I almost gave up waiting when we heard this train approaching. This shot was created by watching my viewfinder while hovering the camera just above the surface of the water, all the while standing is this stream with cool water up to my knees as shad and crawldads swam around.

That is absolutely amazing. I love that shot. My father retired from working for CSX (well, it was still L&N when he started working for them in '69) and I grew up around the line. Thanks for sharing that pic with everyone!

You're very welcome! I plan to post more shots of the L&N "Short Line." It's a very scenic line that still sees a lot of trains.

Really I think GEVO is just another name fro AC44CW

TheNorthern In reply to Joseph-W-Johns [2006-10-24 16:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Short for "GE Evolution series" cleaner locomotives.

The 2nd engine is a GEVO but the lead is a AC4400CW which was recently painted.

Those CSX units look suspiciously like AC6000s...

TheNorthern In reply to factorone33 [2006-08-18 15:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Well, all GE units look the same anymore. The GEVOs have bigger radiators.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

factorone33 In reply to TheNorthern [2006-08-21 18:11:20 +0000 UTC]

This is true. The first unit is a GEVO for sure, but I'm almost certain that second unit is a 6K....It has an extra vent up by the intake and the chassis itself looks longer than one for a C44...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheNorthern In reply to factorone33 [2006-08-22 16:02:32 +0000 UTC]

I thought the extra intake was the spotting feature on the GEVOs, because they have reduced emissions gear there.

Could be, but I do know for sure that the AC6's have 3 up there...check out some in my gallery for reference (since UP's been kind enough to send me about 13204939025 in the last few weeks ).

:d eheh never seen it, it's from a Tom Waits song called "A Bad Liver And A Broken HEart"

TheNorthern In reply to Lady-Fuschia [2006-08-18 16:06:50 +0000 UTC]

You haven't seen "Airplane!"? Oh man, you haven't lived! It was one of the first parody films. [link]

It doomed Leslie Neilson to a lifetime of spoof films.

Ted Striker's "drinking problem" comes when he goes to take a drink and misses his mouth to dump it over his shirt to a shocking orchestra hit.

Oh my! Incidentally on a scale of 1 to 10 how are excited are you about Snakes On A Plane??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheNorthern In reply to Lady-Fuschia [2006-08-22 16:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Um... -4. Thats four less than zero.

I'm tired of films where the villains are animals. If somebody turned loose snakes on an airplane, they probably would curl up in the crawl spaces and want to be left alone. Snakes always get a bad rap in movies, as do sharks. (Although Jaws was pretty good.)

HAhahahahahah awwwwwww what a grouch!

I saw it the other night, it was actually surprisingly good! But yeah I know what you mean about animals being evil in films but -shrugs- I just went to see SOAP for the comedy value

TheNorthern In reply to Lady-Fuschia [2006-08-27 19:50:41 +0000 UTC]

I understand there is a gripping scene where the snakes escape to a downtown LA skyscraper where they blow up the roof, and one of them takes Bruce Willis's wife hostage...

oh, wait... that's Die Hard.

Die Hard: The Musical??? That's hilarious! What were the songs like?

"Oooooh... Yippie-ky-aye! Mother Fucker! Now I got a machine guuuuuun!"

Or did they use real songs like, "Walking on Broken Glass."

Lady-Fuschia In reply to TheNorthern [2006-09-10 17:08:25 +0000 UTC]

oh they used yippie-ky-aye a lot!! No the songs were all written by the guy who made it! They're compiling it all onto an album at some point, when they get round to it I'll e-mail you some of the tracks because they were hilarious!!

You're welcome! It was truly a pleasure to view and comment on such a great image. I get so tired of seeing "cookie-cutter" 3/4 wedge shots I could scream. It's nice to see railroad "art" for a change.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheNorthern In reply to Wessonnative [2006-08-16 15:51:20 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. That is why I post my pics at dA instead of any railfan sites. I see thousands and thousands of train shots where the train may be interesting, but the photo has no appeal whatsoever. I may shoot trains because I like them, but I approach the photo as an artist first and foremost. I try something different almost every time.
