Description ~ Commission for Dr. Bitey : ~

Pheeew, glad this one is finished ! I started working on this a month bu agot never really went further than the sketch. Then I discovered the magical power of speed painting, and even though this took far more than just two or three hours, I'm happy with the result.

EDIT : I'd like to apologize to Bitey, and all my commissioners in the first place. I went too far with my words here, and forgot that you people are the ones I have to thank for my current popularity. I was expecting something from you that you're not always able to provide, and forgot that the customer is the king. Sorry, it won't happen again. The original description has been edited, but if anyone wants to see the text as a proof, send me a note, I saved it as a proof of how stupid I can act sometimes.

Also, thank you all for pointing out how silly and mean I was being here. I regret what I've done, and will use that mistake as a lesson for the future.

You know late in PH (early vol 5-ish) when Blackjack starts having hallucinations of Cognitum's dystopia? THIS is what she sees. ;-D

Ooohh, that slightly tilted perspective, that lighting, that architecture.... very, very nice. I also love the ponies that show the scale of the thing, I barley noticed them at first.

Huhu, thanks a lot, Nukebro ! The tilted perspective was added at the very end to make it look more interesting, and the same goes for the foreground with the ponies.

Calling out your commissioners shows some really bad taste.  I mean, seriously bad.

Mh. Well, while this looks awesome, if the commissioner just asked you to almost copy references they gave you, that might not make for the most interesting commission...
Oh well. I mean people pay you to draw, not specifically be creative.
Now, I really wish I could commission you, as I am in need of someone who does amazing backgrounds, but I don't have any physical online money... Unless you take points? I don't remember.

Awesome work nevertheless.

TheOmegaRidley In reply to Rotorix [2014-10-18 19:08:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm paid to draw, that's true. But if I actually want to attract people with my work, I have to go the extra mile and be creative, and come up with something else than what other people did before me. That could sound hypocritical coming from a guy drawing Fallout: Equestria stuff, but in the end, I was expecting a bit more coming from the commissions. Guess I disappointed myself in the process.

Anyway, glad you like it.

Hey, how much are your commissions now? Do your commissions cost real money or can I pay with points?

I didn't quite ask for a straight copy. It was inspired by that city, yes, but calling it a cut and paste job is embellishing a bit.

Rotorix In reply to DrBitey [2014-10-18 18:54:57 +0000 UTC]

Hm. All right. I'm not making and judgments of you, if that's what you're wondering.
But hey, ya got what you payed for, so at the end of the day (or month, as it seems) that's all that matters.

TheOmegaRidley In reply to DrBitey [2014-10-18 18:04:54 +0000 UTC]

Rereading the description, it sounds more aggressive/disappointed than planned, but my point stands : There was nothing really creative about this picture and it's theme, after all. It's hengsha, minus the water and now in a caldeira, and with ponies. :/ Also, this wasn't directed specifically at you, but it's just the feeling I had while I was working. I hope I didn't offend you, because that's not my goal here.

DrBitey In reply to TheOmegaRidley [2014-10-18 18:17:33 +0000 UTC]

I won't lie, it's more than a little flustering to witness an artist complain publicly about a picture I paid them to do. I've honestly yet to have that happen until now. Feels a bit like I'm being strung along, especially considering the picture was commissioned for a friend. I'd honestly have felt better if you were simply up front with me about it; if you could put it up for everyone to read, well, I feel like it would've done fine in private confidence. It certainly requires less, well, audacity.

Pechallai In reply to DrBitey [2014-10-18 19:05:36 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't really say he strung you along, that would imply he were delivering an inferior product to what you were expecting. As I understand it, you got exactly what you wanted--a copy of an existing locale with ponies added into it. A commissioned artist's job is to comply with their commissioner's wishes, even if they might have misgivings about what they're being asked to draw. It's not out of character to offer suggestions on how to better a work, but for the most part they do as they are asked. If it's here on his dA, that means you gave final approval and you're happy with the finished product, which means he did his job well.

I will concede that speaking his mind may have been something to keep between the both of you, however.

DrBitey In reply to Pechallai [2014-10-18 19:08:37 +0000 UTC]

Not strung along in quality, but in tone/mentality; it's uncomfortable to be paying somebody for a service that they're not enjoying, and at no point was it expressed that it wasn't being enjoyed, so it's a fair deal distressing when I learn that it was unpleasant, especially in the tone that was given in the description.

Got a lot of misgivings about the whole thing now.

Subtlety and tact have never been my strong points, and I should've thought about posting my opinion in public like this a little more, I guess. I'm sorry if I offended you, again, that wasn't my goal.

JetWave In reply to TheOmegaRidley [2014-10-18 20:16:04 +0000 UTC]

If you're truly sorry, you should probably edit the description and apologize there. As it is now, your commissioner is put in a bad light. I appreciate these things being said, but it would be much better said in either private or public without anyone put in a spotlight as if they were a villain. Leaving it there would also put you in a bad light as well. If you're not honest with your customers until it's too late people might and most likely will reconsider buying from you.

No one wants to pay money to receive artwork loaded with drama.
