Description Spider-man's reputation was going through the dumps. While previously he was known as the "Friendly Neighborhood Wall-crawler" people had become more wary of him after his violent phase with the alien Symbiote, in which he came very close to killing a man in front of a crowd. Even stoping said alien symbiote, now bonded with a new, vengeful host and getting himself some swanky new threads hadn't done wonders to his damaged reputation. To top it all up, Jonah Jameson saw the oportunity and took it. He was more than happy to tell everyone within earshot that he had called it: Spider-man was a deranged lunatic waiting to snap, and now that he had done so, it was about time somebody took it upon themselves to stop him once and for all.

It wasn't long before somebody answered the call. One day, without warning, Spidey was attacked in broad daylight, right in the middle of Time Square. The attacker emerged dramatically from a cloud of green smoke, a purple cape enveloping his figure and some crystal bubble hiding whatever features he may or may not have had. The attacker eased the crowd of onlookers: He was an ally. A mystical defender there to deal with the menace of Spider-man. The web spinner wasn't having any of that, and tried to strike the fishbowl headed attacker, but he had vanished before the punch could connect, only to strike from behind. The battle was on, but before it could extend further, a loud scream snapped Spidey to his senses. The smoke scattered, and he wittnessed all of the damage he had done seemingly by himself, with the mysterious attacker having already vanished.

It didn't take long before the image of Spider-man, wildly punching cars and poles, flooded all the social media, further convincing the public that he had to be put in a straight jacket before he could hurt anyone. Just has Peter Parker began to wonder what could be worse, his unknown adversary hijacked all of the major news outlets with a message: He would take down Spider-man, free of charge, for his own good as well as that of his fellow citizens. So proclaimed Mysterio, New York's Mystical Defender.

Next time Spidey faced off against Mysterio was in the middle of Central Park. None of his hits were connecting, but after a lengthy battle, Spidey finally had Mysterio cornered. He was ready to deal a final blow on his cromed face when, once again, the smoke cleared, and so did his head. Once he was aware of his surroundings, he realized, to his horror, that he was about to strike a civillian, with some others were scattered around him, webbed and fearful.

Now Peter was really scared: Either he was going crazy, just like the Bugle was saying, or he was against a foe with powers far beyond his punching level. He was just about ready to give up on being Spider-man, for the sake of everyone's well being, when Mary Jane called his attention to an important detail. She had previously stated that that "Mysterio" guy seemed familiar to her, and she had finally remembered from where: He had been the star of a schlocky direct to video film series she had caught on TV many years ago. She remembered the acting, dialogue and direction screamed "Obscure B-movie", but the special effects were astounding. The movies were from the late 1980ยดs, but the effects were almost better than current CGI. And furthermore, they were quite similar to the powers this "Mysterio" possesed.

With further help from both MJ and Gwen Stacy, Peter managed to get further information regarding the films. It was harder than any of them had expected, as they were very so obscure they made "Robot Monster" look like a blockbuster. But They did manage to find some information on the guy who provided the Special Effects. A guy by the name of Quentin Beck. Beck had done some rather extensive work for the production company "Reinhardt Pictures" for several years. All of their movies were cheesy at best, but the Effects were pretty much lifelike. Beck even got to appear in some of the latest ones, showing that his acting abilities were only a slight improvement over that of his co stars. Nevertheless, he never got any sort of breakthrough. "Reinhardt Pictures" shut down years ago, leaving Beck with only the most minor of roles, his effect work being left behind in favor of CGI.

Peter was now convinced they had their guy. Beck's voice, from the movies he was in, was almost a perfect match to that of Mysterio's, give or take some distorsion. He was also convinced that he was dealing with an overdramatic ham, so it was a safe bet that his "Evil Lair" would be an abandoned "Reinhardt" studio. Sure enough, there was one in the outskirts of New York, and when Spidey went to visit, he found pretty much what he expected: All sort of equipment and tech, seemingly design to fool the senses into seeing what he wanted them to see. He took some snapshots of the place, when Beck himself showed up. Peter's perception of him was right, it didn't take him long to trick him into going on a supervillain monologue, where he confessed that he did all he did for the attention. He was now a hero, and Spider-man was a villain, and all he needed now was to finish him off. He summoned some android decoys to fight off SPidey, which he fended off with ease, but that was only a distraction so that the real Beck could get a hold of his equipment. He once again submerged Peter into a state of daze, where reality and illusions mixed. The fight took them outside and into the New York traffic. This time, however, Spidey had the edge, as he now knew that most of Beck's tricks were false. He had him beat, his helmet broken, his confesions recorded to clear his name. However, unexpectedly, Beck began to rant and rave about how he wasn't going to get away with this, and that the good guys would triumph in the end. Peter was so shocked by this that he almost didn't notice Mysterio hiding both his camera roll and his recorder, having taken them from him when they grappled. Before he could react, Beck threw himself off the building and into the pavement below. All the onlookers saw and heard were the dying words of Mysterio, before he was thrown to his death by Spider-man.

Spidey's reputation lay in tatters, the evidence of his innocence taken away. Just as he wondered what could make things worse, all media broadcasts were hijacked by the late Mysterio. He claimed that, while his physical form may have been taken away, his spirit was healing, waiting to be ready to once again fight against the menace of Spider-man. So proclaimed Mysterio , New York's inmortal guardian.
