I've been asked a lot on how I did my ahoge for my America from Hetalia: Axis Powers cosplay, and I said I would have a tutorial up on how to do it. Well, here is it. Prepare for tl;dr.

Yes, my explanations are long, and maybe confusing at times, but this is my first time making a tutorial, I'm really not sure how I'm supposed to go about shortening what I have so, please be patient.

In any case, may this tutorial help fellow cosplayers. Later, I may make character specific tutorials if people ask (such as Greece and Turkey's curls).

Questions anyone?

You can use 14 gauge wire.

Are these heavy at all? Cause I'm trying to do the Canada one, but very thin, to use as a hairpiece rather than attached to a wig.Β

Sorry for the late message! Canada's ahoge isn't particularly heavy depending on how thick you make it or how much gel you use. But it needs a thick/sturdy wire to prevent it from falling over and something to keep it weighed down (like a wig). As far as making it a clip on piece to real hair I haven't found a way to attach the ahoge without a wig (and no one's informed me of any successful attempts).

I'll probably try it a couple times before giving up and buying a wig X3

Wow, thanks for uploading this, it's a really helpful tutorial! ^w^Β
I'm making a Canada ahoge like this one and you said your wire was too small in gauge. (I don't really know what that means )Β So what kind of wire would you recommend for me?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheonenamedA In reply to VividSplash [2015-10-21 11:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Wire gauge is how thick a wire is. The lower the number the thicker the wire is, and the higher the number the thinner the wire. So, if I remember correctly, I used a 16 gauge wire for this tutorial which I found was too thin to hold up the weight of the ahoge. I would instead recommend using 12-14 gauge wire. But, it's not just enough that the wire is thick, you have to bend it and make sure that it's not easily bended.

Hi, i'm doing a Romano at next years Anime Blues Con and do you know of any place where i could get wefts or hair extensions for a cheap price? I'm definitely not rich so I can't go and buy those $10-20 wefts and hair extensions.Β

TheonenamedA In reply to Shizu-ChanAkaElaina [2015-10-12 21:29:02 +0000 UTC]

If you have a long wig you can cut wefts from there. Either than that you can try to look for cheap clip-in hair extensions from Party City, but they're really not that good quality.

TheonenamedA In reply to abby101leigh [2015-06-20 02:54:15 +0000 UTC]

I'd go with 12 or 14 gauge wire, but bend it first to make sure it's fairly stiff and hard to bend.

Hey I'm doing a Canada cosplay on May 17 for Motor City Comic Con but I'm using my actual hair instead of a wig(i can't afford a wig anyways) and I was just wondering if there would be any way i could use this on my real hair. Like maybe using a clip or barrette to hold it in instead of attaching it to the wig?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheonenamedA In reply to emidumplin [2015-04-27 04:11:24 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried to attach ahoges to my real hair, so I can't say much from experience how well that would work. Β I'd worry about the clip showing if it's going to be clipped right on your hairline, but if you could find a way to brush your hair so that it covers over the clip it might work.

how long would you recommend to make each weft?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheonenamedA In reply to verameanstruth [2014-11-13 05:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Well I find working with shorter cut wefts is a lot easier to manage, especially if you're working with a glue that dries quickly. Β So cutting wefts around 3-4 inches works best for me.

For the tutorial I think I'm using 16 gauge wife, although it's really really weak. Β Since making that tutorial I switched to using 14 gauge wire. Β Though, sometimes some manufacturers make more pliable wires so your best bet is to try to bend some wire and see how much resistance it has to bending. Β I'm not entirely sure what sort of medal the wire I use is but I bought it from a craft store. Β You might have some luck finding wire at a a home improvement store too.

Do you have any idea if hair extensions will work in the place of wig weft? I'm using my natural hair for a Nyo!N. Italy, so I don't have any wig weft. Also - do you know if barber shears are about the same as styling shears? This is my first costume/cosplay, so I'm going into this practically knowledge-less. o3o
Great tutorial!

TheonenamedA In reply to WolfWarrior01 [2014-10-02 07:34:29 +0000 UTC]

Hair extensions should work fine since they're essentially the same thing with the only difference being wefts are extensions that don't have the clip in them. Β And barber shears look to be the same as styling shears (I'm not too well versed in hair styling so I'm not 100% sure, but google images of the two they seem the same). Β As long as the shears are sharp then you're good. Β Good luck! Β You might want to practice cutting a bit to get a feel for using the shears first before diving right into making the hair curl.

eheh so i know that you posted this four years ago, but others are still commenting, and I want to ask a question. I am making an Italy curl (a romano one too but its identical and beside the point) and I got 7 feet of 16 gauge wire today. is that too thick? also will it support the weft fibers and glue and gel and stuff or..?? sorry but I want to get this on the first try as I have very limited weft fibers to deal with.. Anyways, sorry if I should've sent you a note instead of a comment but…yea.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheonenamedA In reply to LowlyWorm [2014-07-09 06:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry for the late reply! Β Well, for my ahoges I usually use 14 gauge wire, I've used 16 before and it was too thin and weak to support anything larger than America's ahoge. Β But play around and bend your wire a bit, if you find it's really easy to bend it and it has no resistance then you'll want to opt for a stronger wire.

Thank you very much for your tutorial! It's the best ahoge tutorial I found on the internet!
I had to do this very humongous hair antennas, over 1m each, for Maya Natsume (from Tenjou Tenge - www.tumblr.com/photo/1280/kyri… . I even had to use some reinforced wire just to hold it weight.

The problem now is that I can't find anyway that they stay in place. They are always bending to one or other side, falling! Do you have any tip that could help me?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheonenamedA In reply to bzko [2014-05-10 18:03:23 +0000 UTC]

Well the only thing I can think of is using an even stronger wire. What I've found that helps add extra strength to a wire is if you fold the wire in half and twist it together, so that might help make it less likely to bend. Also, if you're having issues with just the ahoge falling over try bending the wire at the base into a circle shape inside of just folding it over like in the tut. That way it would sit on your head between your head and the wig and that would help keep it up.
