Description "Daethryn"
September 21st, 2008
Watercolors, india ink, ArtRage

This is my main character Daethryn from the story I'm writing. Well, I haven't really started 'writing' it so much. But it's being formed in the creative recesses of my brain.

Some description then: Daethryn is rather tall, about 5'9 and is very slender and willowy. She has light grey eyes and waist-length black hair. She has a small, delicate nose and mouth, large eyes and a pale, gaunt face.

So! Perhaps someday it’ll be written and published; but as I’m planning on becoming a nun right out of high-school, perhaps the story will have to wait. Who but God knows though? *shrugs* Anyway, I’ve drawn other pictures of Daethryn, but I think I’m the most happy with this one. I tried this in a kind of “art nouveau” style. I don’t know if it looks like art nouveau, but I’m pleased with the hybrid turnout.

The thing I like most about it is how it all describes her inner characteristics very well. I’ve already started a series out of this, but I don’t know when it’ll be done because of school and all those inconvenient things like that. My next one coming up is “Rhianna”. I don’t think I’ve made a picture of her yet but she’s also one of the main characters.

Thats a very lovely character design, and another beautiful drawing. Well done.
Hey, I didn't know you were becoming a nun! That's soo cool! Any order in particular you looking at?

Thanks! ^ ^

Perhaps Carmelite, though I'm not exactly certain by any means. I just know that I'd like to become a cloistered nun.

Ooh, my mom is a 3rd Order Carmelite... she loves it.
That's pretty cool.

I know someone who is one too, I think they have meetings at our parich. Unfortunetly though, I'mm too young to join, I have to be at least 18.

So pretty! I love the background and her flowy outfit and expressive pose! One thing I might say could be better, since her hair and clothes are blowing to the left (our left, her right) I might have put her farther to the right, to make her look centered. But then, you might have done this on purpose, to give a stronger sense of the wind pushing her.

Thank you very much! ^ ^

I did notice later (once I had inked it! ) that she wasn't really centered, but I rather kind of liked it afterwards. I think it makes it look more dramatic.

Yeah, it adds a touch of tension to an otherwise very symmetrical composition.

The art nouveau turned out very well, methinks - and the shapes and details are spectacular! She looks very pretty too, although it looks to me as if her lower body turned out a little too small, compared to the shoulders and head.

Perhaps you'll be able to write your book even as a nun? I don't know how strict exactly your order will be about "private" work, but I know of several nuns who have written both fictional and scholarly texts. As long as it isn't blasphemous (which, knowing you, I cannot imagine) I don't think there'll be a problem to find some time for writing.

Theophilia In reply to Qitian [2008-09-26 21:47:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I really appreciate that! (especially since I'm trying to embark on an art-nouveau experiment).

Wow! I didn't even notice that! Thanks for pointing it out. Her hips should be at least as wide as her shoulders. And i can't say thick robes for cover-up either.

Perhaps I will be able to. I'll have to find out eventually. But I'm not overly anxious about gettin it done while I'm alive. Perhaps this is bad point for me to work on, but perhaps I'm just a little afraid for my mind's child to emerge. I liek adding details to it in my brainy-womb.

I can see the art nouveau influence, and I think it's beautiful.

You might be able to juggle a religious life with writing a story. That may be one of the things you talk about with your superiors. I'm sure that if it contributes to The Cause, they will be supportive.

What order are you looking at? Perhaps you should get an Associates' degree before you enter the novitiate, just in case. If you or God decides it's not what you want, you'll have a bit of preperation and a means to suport yourself.

Theophilia In reply to GreenInkling [2008-09-26 21:31:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! *does a little dance. I think my Rhianna one will be a little more art nouveau. (Weird French people, nouveau is such a strange word to spell! )

I'll have to see when I get there. I suppose in the mean time I can just sit back and day-dream all I want about it.

So far the Passionists and the Carmelites have really peaked my interest. My main criteria is to be cloistered and contemplative.

Beautiful! She reminds me Tolkien's Luthien, with her long dark hair and blue coat . I love the stars around her, and the moon on the left - it could be an interesting sky for a night picture.

Oh! Thank you very much! Your comment pleases me greatly. Heh, I never really thought of her like Luthien though, except in appearence. Yeah, I liked doing the stars a lot. Night skies are among one of my favorite things to draw.

I don't see how being a nun can stop you from writing a book. Don't worry about it.

By the way, I'm writing my own story too (two actually). I'm pretty much trying to be careful of showing a few details of it on the net. I'm a little scared that someone might steal an idea before I publish them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Lykex [2008-09-23 23:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I'm kind of indifferent to the whole other-people-stealing-my stuff. Yeah, I think I'd be really miffed, but hey, it's on their conscience, and if you're actually making a story, you might be able to sue them. Or call them out. I think it's more of the thief's problem than mine. Besides, if nothing else, I know that it's my story.

Beautiful. As always your fonts (calligraphy?) are amazing.
I'll remember to keep you and your vocation in my prayers. What order are you thinking of joining? The Carmelites?

In Christ,
Marian

Thank you! I like doing calligraphy. I just kind of doodle it all over pages and on the margins of notebooks.

Oh thank you very much! I've been thinking in the direction of Carmelites or perhaps Passionists. I still have yet to find and order that I'm REALLY excited about. I just know that I definetly want to be contemplative and cloistered.

A friend of mine entered the carmelites a couple of years back. She loves it.
I haven't found my vocation yet, but I have definitely considered the Dominicans in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration (AL, AZ, TX). Gotta love the habits! ^_^
I'm also keeping an eye on the new order founded by Rosalind Moss in St. Louis. I was pretty excited when I heard Rosalind Moss explain their charism.
