Description Godfrey: Knight of the Holy City
November 6th, 2012
Colored Pencil
5½ x 8 inches (14 x 20 cm)

As cool as wine the wind is sighing
Among the dreamy pines
As evening light is slowly dying
And a lonely bell still chimes.

So many songs, so many stories
The stony hills recall...
Around her heart my city carries
A lonely ancient wall.

Yerushalaim all of Gold!
Yerushalaim, Bronze and Light!
Within my heart I shall treasure
Your song and sight.

Happy Election day everyone! (if you’re American anyway). Anyway, I’ve been meaning to finish my little colored pencil portrait of Godfrey for awhile, and now that I finally have, I’m ready to begin some more extensive projects. I’m fairly happy with how this portrait turned out. It came out a lot more colorful than I initially planned, but I’m happy enough with it. My sister kept telling me that she thought Godfrey was way too pretty, but, well...I guess I won't shed too many tears about that. So here's a little humble colored pencil portrait of Godfrey de Montferrat in front of the Temple Mount of the Holy City of Jerusalem. And (le gasp!) Godfrey is actually smiling for once! Enjoy!

The character Godfrey de Montferrat is from Crown of the World by Nathan Sadasivan.

Too pretty? What man can be too pretty? XD He's perfect <3 I love his mouth, it has that curved lip thing that I'm crazy about, reminds me of the portraits Courbet painted ! Also, clear eyes give me a piercing stare, like a hawk. I actually like the fact he doesn't look like the big strong scary knight, it gives a different perception of him, which is always great.

I couldn't say enough how much I love your colouring skills. Lol, I must be tiring with my neverending compliments XD

Haha, thank you!! I stand corrected.

Courbet has some amazing portraits. I think I like his self-portraits the best though.

His self-portraits are wonderful! I once read he was a very vain man. Seing how he painted himself I can only think it to be true ! I still love them though.

Thank you!!! Originally I was going to do a plain background, but then I thought I might just give it a little bit of extra color. Turned out way better than I thought it would.

I'll tell you what, no matter what, I'll be happy when this election is over either way, JUST because that means the phone will stop ringing 24-7 with all of the political calls. Blegh.

Thanks!

I love it! But... On le Temple Mount... Dome of the Rock + Cross?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to bytheLionsmane [2012-11-06 22:02:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Yep! The Dome of the Rock was built in 691 AD by Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik. During the Crusades (As Wikipedia says "...the Dome of the Rock was given to the Augustinians, who turned it into a church while the Al-Aqsa Mosque became a royal palace. The Knights Templar, who believed the Dome of the Rock was the site of the Temple of Solomon, later set up their headquarters in the Al-Aqsa Mosque adjacent to the Dome for much of the 12th century." The Knights Templar later received it from the King of Jerusalem, set up their headquarters on the temple mount (hence their name "Templars") and called it the "Templum Domini." (Temple of the Lord) They made it into a church, which it remained until Saladin took Jerusalem in 1187.
