Description Jacques de Maille - portrait sketch
October 30th 2012
Colored Pencil (and a wee bit of GIMP)

Here's yet another sketch, this time of our old friend Jacqusies from Crown of the World. I can't really bring myself to work on anything really time-consuming and super detailed simply because I can't seem to draw with any kind of real pizazz at the moment, though that comes and goes. Hopefully it'll come back sooner, rather than later, because I have projects to work on dagnabbit! So here it be. There's something a bit off with his eyes and his face, but otherwise this is generally how I imagine him. His eyes also didn't come out too well, so I put a little bit more light back into them with GIMP. And that be it, enjoy!

Haius, I think your comments make me a little too happy. Like, grinning-like-an-idiot happy.

YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE

Geoffrey might be pretty, but does he have eyes that can make a woman swoon from thirty feet?Β  No?Β  DIDN'T THINK SO.

Oh wow. Hellooo gorgeous. Your men are all beautiful in the best possible way. I'm totally jealous of how you can tell he has lips, but they look like man lips, not awkwardly pink girl lips on a guy's face. And the beard is gorgeous. I still need to practice facial hair. x_x

Hahah, well, shucks, thanks!

Beards aren't too bad, actually (at least with colored pencil). Lips are.

I love the look of this one! I have been working on improving my own drawing techniques and the blend you have between realism and and comic book-ish design really resonates with me for some reason.
The digital version of your drawing also turned out really well, so whatever work you're doing in GIMP is working. A lot of times it's really difficult to make a photograph of a drawing do any sort of justice to the real thing.

Thank you!!! Well, if you're looking for improving your drawing style, I'd definitely recommend working on little projects like this. I've found it's been helping me tremendously, since I don't feel like I absolutely HAVE to make it come out perfect.

Whatever you did to his eyes in GIMP, it seems to have worked. The blue is very striking.

The Chinese and several Native American groups thought white people were some kind of monster when they first met them (to this day the Cantonese for "white male", gwailou, means "monster man"), in part because bright blue eyes, when every other human you've ever seen has black ones, might as well be glowing red.

Hah, their loss. I think blue eyes are the most beautiful color.

nKhyi-naonZgo In reply to Theophilia [2012-11-10 04:29:38 +0000 UTC]

Beautiful, yes, but, if you've never seen blue eyes before, beautiful in a "holy moley, this thing is some kind of fairy-lord who will drag me off into another world if I'm not careful" sort of way. From the standpoint of the vast majority of the human race, red or yellow hair and green or blue eyes might as well be blue or green hair and red or yellow eyesβ€”humans don't come in those colors, except in Europe, and not even most of the time there.

I remember hearing/reading a similar thing about the Arab tribesmen and their idea of T.E. Lawrence. I don't know if he had blue eyes though. However, Peter O'Toole certainly does.

And then it's awkward because you want to try and take a picture, but that's totally not stalkerish at all and then you feel bad about wanting to take a picture of them because that's just creepy...yeah, I know the feeling. "Can I please just draw your face? I love it!"

Jacques is awake at last!

I really like the expression you gave him; very choleric, proud, and alert. I don't see you use blue eyes on a lot of your close-up portraits, so I enjoy what you did here. Great lighting.
He has a certain edge that I saw in the book, but it was less pronounced...now that I think about it, this fits his character perfectly.

AND WITHOUT A SPANGENHELM!!

Mary was telling me that this is how Jacques needs to look: [link] I'm assuming he's supposed to beat people over the head with that baguette there. I think she wants (not so secretly either--since she straight up just told me this) to take a black marker to my sketchbook and give him a curly black moustache.

But thank you! I'm glad you're partial to my vision of Jacques. Not sure how Nathan feels about it yet though. He saw my sketch of him; and all he said was that it was "interesting" which could mean any number of things.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SaxonwithAxe In reply to Theophilia [2012-10-31 04:13:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm always on my toes when he says that. "Interesting" is one of his catch-all phrases, but it usually means he'll think about it for awhile and email you about it in a few days with some very insightful observations.

You should do an alternate "Baguette Jacques". I would laugh, Nathan would be appalled, and Mary would rejoice. You've satirized Godfrey and Malik, so now Jacques gets a turn.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to SaxonwithAxe [2012-11-10 16:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, after what we did with Godfrey, I'm sure Nathan's "appalled" level has significantly increased. Never underestimate two ladies with pen and paper (and photoshop ).
