I was commissioned to make an image of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus in the style of Japanese wood-block prints. Along with it is a companion piece of Christ Pantocrator . The client asked that I base the pose off of this icon of the Theotokos Eleusa (The Mother of God of Tender Mercy) but in traditional Japanese clothing. I tried to keep the colors as traditional as possible, so Mary wears a blue kimono studded with a little star-floral pattern, and her halo features the "twelve stars" that are shaped like cherry-blossoms. At the top are the characters 神の母 which means "Mother of God" and the Japanese katakana characters in the scroll below that read イエス・キリスト which means "Jesus Christ."
