Acrylic on Wood

It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos,
ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God.
More honorable than the Cherubim,
and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim,
without defilement you gave birth to God the Word.
True Theotokos we magnify you!
~ Axion Estin

Well, I finally got around to finishing this one. It's been in the works since before Christmas of last year and I only just got around to finishing it. I had stopped working on it for a while because I was so disgusted by how bad it was turning out. It was supposed to be a 2014 Christmas gift for the mother of a friend. Instead, I decided to try and finish it for her birthday this year (a week late, but hey). So I spent the last couple of weeks working on trying to finish it, and voila, it is finished.

RANT: Untold hours of agony and pain went into this. There were many times when all I wanted to do was throw my brushes across the room and flip some tables and give up on being an artist altogether. Life lesson learned: I am a dreadful acrylic painter and I have a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with acrylics (maybe oils too, I don't know). I just don't have the patience for painting. I want to get it all done in one or two sittings at most and that just doesn't/can't happen. Also, when there is a significant lack of noticeable progress, I get very discouraged and frustrated. I only got excited about this picture at the very end once I started doing the gold leaf (first time ever using gold leaf on a piece, hurrah!). I'm still not 100% happy with it, but I'm done, and that's really all I ever wanted to be with this piece. And there went my Spring Break. So, as horrendous and frustrating as it was to work on this, I did learn a lot about myself as an artist and about how I work. And I guess that's always a good thing.

The Theotokos of Vladimir is one of my favorite icons of my Mary so I'll probably end up doing yet another rendition of this in my (preferred) medium: ink and watercolor. Time to get back to working with art materials that make sense.

theotokos means she who bore god in her womb, and mary certainly did bear god incarnate in her graciously sanctified womb! praise god for his servant mary!

Seriously, God's doing wonderful and mighty things through Russia right now, and soon China will join Russia in their battles against all kinds of evil and all the enemies of God (Russia and China are in fact fighting ISIS). In fact, I have a video I'd like to show you: youtu.be/91FvJRA4mUg

I love your use of blue and the tenderness in Mary's gaze as well as Jesus' expression. The veil reminded me of the Madonnas done during the late Medieval/Gothic period- Early Renaissance in which artists used lapis lazuli for Mary's veil, but due to time, such pigment has fallen off leaving the dark underpainting, but I emagine that the original colors of the veils must have looked like yours, completely astounding

THANK YOU! You're too kind! I, too, love that deep, dark rich blue in the veil/mantle of the Virgin. I see a lot of images of Mary wearing a sort of pale, baby-blue colored veil an for some reason it just doesn't cut it for me.

I've seen many versions of this icon, but this is definitely the most beautiful!
You did really a stunning work, the way you painted it is amazing! Holy Mary's eyes are so wonderful, they look like diamonds! The tones of colour on baby Jesus' robe are beautiful. You did such an amazing work!

Thank you; I am glad you like it! I think it's just the process for me that's so frustrating, though I'm sure I will continue making more acrylic paintings, (mostly against my will ). In fact, I just finished a commissioned one today, so I'll be posting pictures of it soon.

This is an exceptionally beautiful piece!! I have never worked with acrylics and have always imagined them to be difficult to work with. You did quite well with them on this....a work to be proud of!

Thank you so much! I find them difficult to work with mostly because I always end up getting angry and frustrated when using them.

The blues in this are unbelievable. It makes me want to cry and laugh.

The lool on the babe's face is wonderful, the matching blues are a delight, and, as others have said, thebl cloak is unbelievable.

You do have a love hate relationship with acrylics -- you may hate them, but they love you.

Mary's cloak is gorgeous.    Remember, practice makes perfect!  I think you did a great job on this and despite your frustrations, it's good to do something a little outside your comfort zone.  Major props for tackling this project and for not giving up!!!  Jesus and Mary approve!

Thank you! Yeah....I just hate painting with acrylics. Ask anyone in my family, but for some reason or another I just get really, really angry whenever I paint with acrylics. Still, it's something I expect I shall be doing more of in the future so whether I like it or not I'll get lots of practice. But it is good to try a different medium.

Beautiful job! As to the "rant section"  I think everybody has a medium or mediums that they feel more comfortable with, I went through this also. I think alot of artists do. Despite your frustation, in my opinion you did a great job! Its beautiful! The look in their eyes especially!

THANKS! Yeah, I think it's a number of factors: time, size, materials, not having a good work space, etc. I dunno, for some reason I just get angry when I paint with acrylics.

The hard work was worth it!  No one will ever see the flaws that you see, but I do understand being dissatisfied when something doesn't turn out the way you want.

I look forward to seeing the ink and watercolor version....

Thank you!! Hah, artist problems. I think another part of my frustration might also have had something to do with the size as well, since I'm used to working very small.

Yes! I'm excited about whenever I an manage to get myself to work on it... Hopefully sometime in the summer, if I have the time.

Hahahahaha ohh I share that love-hate relationship with acrylics too! As for oil paint, sorry oil, it's hate for ya!

For a frustrated artist though, I think you manage to finish this piece quite well. Sure it's different from your usual watercolour style, but that's totally understandable. One question: did you prime the wood first before painting? If yes, how did you do the priming? I've never done any pieces on wood before, but it's definitely on my list of want-to-try's.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to agianna [2015-04-12 04:50:27 +0000 UTC]

I've done oil before, and it was okay. It's just expensive and it's hard to clean up. XP But other than that it's okay. If I had someone to teach me how to use them I'd probably like them better.

Yes, I always prime the wood before I paint. To prime your wood you need to sand it down pretty nicely firstly, then you just go to your local hardware store and buy some Primer. I use the foam brushes or one of those wall-paint-rollers to get a nice even coat. Then once the primer is dry, sand that down with fine-grade sandpaper (to make it smoother). You can repeat that as much as you want if you want to get a really smooth surface. For this particular piece I actually didn't get a smooth surface (because I had never done it before) so you can see streaky paint lines in the piece which are...not very desirable.
