Description The Sword at my Side
January 31st 2013
Pen, Photoshop

“My shield hangs stainless still; but I shall not go where they praise it,
A sword is still at my side, but I shall not ride with the King.
Only to walk and to walk and to stun my soul and amaze it,
A day with the stone and the sparrow and every marvellous thing.

I have trod the curves of the Crescent, in the maze of them that adore it,
Curved around doorless chambers and unbeholden abodes,
But I walk in the maze no more; on the sign of the cross I swore it,
The wild white cross of freedom, the sign of the white cross-roads.”
~ The Crusader Returns From Captivity by G.K. Chesterton

So, this is the first proper picture I have ever made with Photoshop. We had to do a self-portrait in Photoshop for our first project, and after going back and forth a couple times between various ideas, I chose this one. I still find it amazing that I've never really used Photoshop before. Anyway, I had a photograph that I used as a reference, I made a pen drawing from that, scanned it in, and then painted over it in Photoshop. We did have the option of using a Wacom tablet, but I really didn't like it. Maybe it just takes some getting used to, but I found it a bit awkward, and I felt like I could do a better job with the mouse. So this is all painting with a mouse. Obviously, in the foreground there, I threw in those two way-overused grass brushes. But hey, they worked. And this might just be because I'm still getting used to Photoshop, but honestly, I think I like GIMP overall a lot better. The latter just seems more intuitive to me, and much more simple. With Photoshop there's just SO much you can do with it that it almost becomes...unhelpful. But we'll see. There's a reason I'm taking this Photoshop class after all.

I was so confused by this because at first I thought it was you in cosplay, and I was gonna be all like YOUR COSTUME IS SO EPIC, but then I looked at it closer and was like Waaaait... and then I read the caption.  XD  IT LOOKS LIKE A PHOTO, DANGIT.

I can tell it's a digital piece, but for a first try it's pretty fabulous! Both Photoshop and GIMP are kinda intimidating to me, so I am jealous of your class. I'm excited to see what all you learn though. Oh yeah, and I STINKING LOVE THIS PICTURE. It's awesome.

Photoshop still intimidates me. This class has definitely been good for me, but I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing. Yay Photoshop tutorials on dA and YouTube?

Very nicely done. I can't imagine trying to draw or render with a mouse having got used to a stylus, nor opening up GIMP again being used to photoshop.

I might feel the same way soon enough. I found out that Adobe has a bunch of programs for free download on their site, so I jumped for it and got CS 2. I don't think it's super sophisticated (I haven't really had the chance to sit down and mess with it yet), but I've heard it's got all the basics, and that's fine with me. I'm afraid I'm a poor college student and it'll probably take me a while before I can afford a tablet, but hey, we'll see how that goes. As it is, I'll just have to get used to the mouse.

Drocan [2013-02-01 09:03:35 +0000 UTC]

The pose and angle are all very dynamic and lifelike. It's less your usual portrait and more of an actual scene, which is very cool. I also think if this is some of your first work then photoshop is definitely something you need to start doing more of. As far as this particular piece goes, I feel like the soft/blurred parts and the sharp/crisp parts are a little too stylistically different to fit together without looking awkward. Look at the mail on the arm, or the difference between the details on the face versus the cloak to get an idea of what I mean. Having certain parts be clearer than others is a great technique (I use it as much as I can in photography) but in future projects see if you can make the transition a little less abrupt.
Obviously you haven't spent a lot of time in photoshop as you mentioned, so normally I wouldn't be too harsh on the critique, but I know you won't take it the wrong way. In fact it's only because I'm so impressed with how it turned out with so little practice that I feel like I can just about skip the encouraging words and go straight to the advice that just might turn this into your most effective medium.

Thank you Drocan! I would love to become more proficient in digital art. I'm sure I just need a lot more practice though, because I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.

Oh no, not harsh at all! I really appreciate the critique! I think it would be really useful to take a photography class (I mean, for a variety of reasons) but also because of the techniques you mentioned.

Very cool, indeed. I have always been impressed by what people can do with Photoshop, although I'm usually too overwhelmed to do anything at all with it. And while the grass may look a bit pixelated, I really like the effect of looking up through the grass.

Great choice of poem to accompany it, too. Chesterton rocks the socks.

Theophilia In reply to LupusAcerbus [2013-02-12 22:55:03 +0000 UTC]

I don't worry, this isn't 100% Photoshop by long range. It's pen work that's just colored in Photoshop. And I also had a very good photo reference too, so...this was by no means a super difficult project. I think Photoshop is really overwhelming too. Especially when I've seen the crazy things that people have done with it. I'm both intimidated and inspired. Hey, that's what tutorials are for, right?

Oh gosh, don't even get me started. Chesterton is the ROCKER of all socks.

Good work!

One of the few good uses of that grass brush (although looks a bit pixelated). Also, is very impressive considering is done with a mouse.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Neoconvoy [2013-02-12 22:47:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Yeah, it is too pixelated. I only had a short amount of time, and the grass was a bit of an after-thought an hour or so before it was due. I tried to smooth the grass down, but, well, it takes a bit more time and attention.

One solution is making a custom brush,, with the same shape, in a bigger resolution.
