Nyx sniffed, trying in vain to rub away the tears on her face with hands that were already too wet to make any difference other than smear the tears more. It seemed so unfair. Why did the other wynglings feel the need to harass her so? Why couldn't they leave her in peace? She had tried to enjoy her hobbies in private, but it was like the bullies had a sixth sense for finding her just when she was reading some "odd" book, or following some instructions she found on speaking to ghosts. There were no friends for her among the living, so maybe there was someone just as lonely as her on the other side that would keep her company? They obviously wouldn't be scared of her interest in the paranormal, since it would be her interest that would make the conversation possible. Her oddness would become her strength. That's all she wanted.

It hurt. It hurt a lot. She couldn't be herself, couldn't do what she enjoyed, couldn't even do nothing without being reprimanded for it. Her only solace was leaving the Nook at the dead of night to go hide out in the woods, changing the place each night if she could so she wouldn't be found as easily. She barely made it into a small clearing amidst a thicket of bushes before collapsing on the dirt, just wishing it would all just go away. Aching pain in her heart. Howling loneliness. Fear in everything she did.

Out of the blue, she heard a rustle of leaves. At first she didn't even care to look, expecting it to be someone who saw her sneak out of the Nook and start hissing insults. Maybe it was a wild animal and she'd get eaten up. Then she'd really be able to speak to ghosts. That didn't seem so bad.

But instead of growls or shouts, all she heard was a tiny voice. Not that of a wyngro, but a distinctive noise that sounded something like the word "warm" right next to her.

Nyx looked up in surprise to see the face of a dark coatala looking down at her. She was surprised to see one out here. Probably a stray, looking at the sub-par grooming on the coatala's mane. He was a bit stringy from living out in the forest by himself, but not starving by any means.

The coatala mewed again, his bright, intelligent eyes studying her with what she assumed was concern.

"I'm okay," she mumbled. "You don't need to worry about me."

The coatala narrowed its eyes. Suspicion? Did he know she was lying?

"R-Really, you can keep going. Or if I'm in your territory or whatever, I'll just leave..." she murmured, shifting to stand up.

But she was pushed over before she could get up all the way, and she looked up at the coatala, her brows furrowing. Was the coatala bullying her too? Just her luck.

Before she could do anything else however, the coatala curled around her, rubbing his face up against hers as a rumble formed in his chest. His long, fluffy tail wrapped around her body, as if to say 'stay here.' A little baffled, Nyx let herself relax, and the coatala scooted even closer to her, practically enveloping her in its sturdy but surprisingly soft body. The deep purr vibrated through her, easing her jangled nerves, so in return, she snuggled into the coatala's embrace. She couldn't remember ever having felt so much love, not even by the one who dropped her off at the Nook. Not even by Alma. It felt good.

"Please stay a while," she whispered to the coatala, closing her eyes.

The coatala responded with a heavier purr.

FINALLY was able to do something with the coatala! I've had this planned for ages, but it took me forever to get around to doing it.

"Coatala seem to have a real tender spot for wynglings. They tend to take on the roles of protectors to wynglings in their family and can usually be found near their 'adopted child.'"
Nyx needed a friend. And wynglings just wouldn't do, she's too suspicious of every nice thing that's done to her, since so many bullies try to play nice to lure her into a false sense of security, only to abuse her for it. So she's built walls up against others, no matter their intentions. Block them out before they can hurt you. Or worse still, hurt them before they can hurt you.

But coatala... coatala don't have ulterior motives. If a coatala wants to be your friend--decides to adopt a wyngling to protect, as coatala were bred to do--you don't have to worry about being betrayed. So TAH-DAH! Nyx has finally found a friend she can bring herself to trust.

NOW TO FIGURE OUT A NAME FOR THIS GORGEOUS CREATURE
