Here's the process I use to develop and idea from thumbnail to color drawing. It's most probably similar to other concept artists out there, but I thought it may interest some folks who don't get to see the inner workings of the process.

As for the ship in the drawing, I imagine it's a weather-worn dogship (multi-purpose ship usually enhanced with various scrounged and salvaged ship parts) that's a bit long in the tooth, but still able to hold its own in the remote systems where it would be found. It could be a courier or a militia ship and carries a crew of two with space for an additional one or two passengers in cramped, sparse quarters. There would also be space for contraband or cargo. Weapons-wise, it has a heavy cannon running from amidships to its bow, one cannon on each thruster pod and a self-defense turret behind the pilot. It would most probably also have some missiles or some other guided munitions.
