Something I've often wondered about, and that you likely have too, is what do you suppose camouflage in space would look like. Would it be painted black to blend into the darkness, or be given more of a "razzle dazzle" pattern like on World War One battleships, designed to deceive attackers as to the true shape, size, and location of the craft? Would it vary by region, such as asteroid belt camouflage, or certain colors to blend in based on the color of light being cast by nearby stars? What might a military camouflage scheme look like versus something composed by a pirate or smuggler?

I've often wondered how something like that would work in "practical" sci-fi, but I'm curious as to what your thoughts might be, or if it's all truly obsolete by the time we've moved onto plasma weapons.

Keep up the awesome work mate, you've got a positively stunning armada here! Cheers!

Thanks for the question. I have wondered about it and have been tempted to start using some crazy color schemes, but I have always assumed that ships that close to close quarters battle (like dogfighters) would have some sort of active visual shrouding compound coating much of their exterior that would make them blend nearly seamlessly into their surroundings - if you can't see it, it's more difficult to hit. Granted, most combat ships would rely on numerous detection and scanning systems that feed data to AI targeting systems that are independent of visual sights, so, for the most part, the visual shrouding would be overkill. But it would affect morale, bolstering that of their crews and degrading that of the enemy. And in many cases, pilots of ships damaged by enemy fire - where targeting systems or AI nodes are knocked out - would have to switch to good ol' visual target acquisition, making the job nearly impossible. Other vessels like capital ships, destroyers, frigates and the like wouldn't worry too much about camouflage as an combat they engage in would be beyond visual range, so they could be luminous pink for all intents and purposes. However, dark, menacing color schemes would look cooler.
That's my 2 cents worth, anyway.

Hello, Your ships are really beautiful ! Did your draw it with a computer, or on paper ? If it's with your computer, what is your software please, I try to learn how to drawing ships like that !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

therealraxxis In reply to ElyoPi [2017-01-12 05:18:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words. I draw most of the ships on normal photo-copy paper with Copic markers (although any concept art type marker series should do) and normal Hi-Tec black pens (0.3 and 0.4 size nibs). I do clean the images up a little on computer using PhotoPlus (or now Affinity Photo). I have done some vector-based work as well, which I do in Xara (it's the easiest package to use for drawing, IMHO).

It comes down to the idea and the functionality of the design, I think, more than how pretty it is. My advice would be to start with simple designs and work up to the more complicated stuff. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks again for the comments.  Good luck with you art.

I love your design concepts. Their so detailed and clean. If you don't mind me asking how would you determine a ships hull Width?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

therealraxxis In reply to aktikon1 [2016-05-07 01:23:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment. I determine the width by "eyeballing" it while doing the rough sketch with a very light marker. At this point, it just comes naturally so I don't really have to adjust it too much, if at all. Like everything, it's just practice.
