Thanks.  They did have a cool design for their character

Fairly good. Proportions are believable, though there's room for improvement, e.g. hands, lighting, stylising clothes better, better line of motion, etc. Quite like the texture of his hair.

Oh mah gawd, an actual critique?  Thank you.  You are like, one of the first people to do this XD

Thanks.  I know the hands and lighting could still be worked on.  I am still playing around with that stuff as much as I can.  The cloth were from the creators design so I just did that.  Im still working on hair.  I still am trying to find a way that I like XD

Haha, no worries. Criticism is the best for improvement imo, more people should do it... and learn to accept it!

It helps to understand how clothes fold. I tend to use specific crease types and a liberal use of sharp lines, as well a photo reference if i'm struggling.

Learning lighting just takes a lot of observing other drawings, photos, and just noting it in your day to day activities whenever you can, no real easy trick to it in my experience.

Also for hands, my trick is using photo reference (typically just my own hands), and understanding the common positions they assume, since a lot of the time hands just stick to muscle memory. They're also slightly larger than people think. I tend to scale them according to a character's face, since they're about the same size.

therunningchicken In reply to Wolfantom [2017-01-17 23:09:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.  I feel like some people dont like the last part of that XD

Oh.  I thought you meant the design of the cloth.  I misunderstood that one then.  oops XD

Yeah.  I try to pay attention to all this stuff, but come time to actually draw it all I feel like my brain just forgets everything.  I have been trying to work on that lately so hopefully I can do it better on the next pic.

That's a good way of thinking of the proportion.  But what happens when the face is out of proportion? Haha

Wolfantom In reply to therunningchicken [2017-01-18 05:07:34 +0000 UTC]

You need a good memory for learning. But I swear I don't remember everything I've seen when I need it for my drawings lol. So really it takes time for stuff to eventually sink in.

You make a good point about faces. If you are doing a style where the characters' heads are larger than what is proportionally correct (lot of anime does it, yeah) you can afford to have them smaller. Depends on the style you want though, some exaggerated styles have the hands be large as well (e.g. Toru Nakayama's stuff), some don't (like any of the chibi styles you see out there). In the case of the latter, I would just scale hands to the arms, using references to make sure they look realistic enough to be believable.

Yeah.  I need to put more time into it.  But there is also university to deal with ;u;

Style is weird.  I feel like some people have coo styles but I have yet to get one I can keep drawing over and over again XD

Wolfantom In reply to therunningchicken [2017-01-19 11:32:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, well all have irl shit to do lol. Boggles the mind how much better I'd be at drawing right now if I had more free time. I'm sure it's the same for you lol. Helps to see improvement in terms of months and years imo.

Yeah you've got to really work to design and learn a specific style to keep to it. It's only been in the past year that I've made my own consistent, unique style. Before then it was largely just copying the styles of other artists I liked. It takes a good understanding of existing styles and what makes a certain type of style "work" to make your own, which might just require a long time of just of copying/being inspired by other artist's styles before you can effectively create your own. Also you've gotta be pretty anal-retentive in exact line placement to keep the "looks" of characters and the style in general consistent, which takes a lot of practice ("25 expressions" challenges and etc, which are pretty common on dA, is one good method I found to do it). Despite all of that, I ain't saying you have to make your own unique style to be consistent, it's just one good way to do it.

therunningchicken In reply to Wolfantom [2017-01-20 17:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I feel that I have gotten better.  But it's a slow moving progress XD

I get what you mean.  The only problem that I come across is that I will see certain aspects of peoples art that I like but they cold be the same in 2 or 3 different artists.  So I could like how the do an angled face outline in all three so I try them out or try to combine them somehow XD
But I also dont know what makes a style good anymore.  Like, I will see people who are really good with similarities but then you will find some other popular people with something completely different that sometimes doesnt look that appealing but is still popular.  If that makes sense haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfantom In reply to therunningchicken [2017-01-23 02:45:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's best to combine the styles of several artists, unless you actually want to look like you're ripping them off lol.

As for styles looking good, it's very subjective. No such thing as an objectively good style really. You can either do something that's proved to be appealing to a lot of people (a la the SAO art style and the countless similar versions you see bloody everywhere in modern anime), or do something that you yourself find appealing.

therunningchicken In reply to Wolfantom [2017-01-23 04:26:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it can be a pain to try an not copy exact so that people dont get the wrong idea.

Yeah, I know there is not "good" style, but I mean the stuff that gets popular.  Like I see some people who make anatomy mistakes but since it's a thing throughout it works out for the piece.  OR something like Sharp edges at every turn or something like that.  I dont have a problem with them, it's kind of cool to see different things.  But I wonder how they get the fame they do when there is sometimes a kind of standard depending on the art styles.  Yah know?

The chara-design looks cool, his anatomy too, and I love the way you colored the hair !
This can be improved on I think, you can make the lines smoothest and add more textures and effects... ^^

Yeah, I have yet to really play around with effects.  I have been playing around with them a bit, but it would look kind of weird so I figured I wouldnt really include them so it doesnt look to weird XD

I dont know, I think it might be the shape or the lack of detail on the face that kinda bugs me.  I needed to add more probably XD

I will try...when I get another commission or when I am finished with this semester because there are so many projects ;u;
