This is a project done for one of my Drawing & Painting for Communication Arts Students classes (yes, there is more than one).We were given a list of objects, and were asked to number them 1 through 10 based upon how easily we thought we could illustrate each one. Then, we were given a list of adjectives and asked to do the same thing. We then combined the objects and adjectives to form odd phrases (ie "underwater hats") and were asked to illustrate them using designer's ink and a pen (the kind with the nibs).
This is the result. At the last minute we were told we had to put the word "Oddities" in there somewhere, which is why it looks haphazardly tossed in.
My favorites are the underwater hats and the aristocratic boat. Theres something about a boat with a monacle that cracks me up.
04/14/04 Update: This project is due for review soon, so I did some minor touch-ups and added a light gray background to further distinguish the important illustrations from the unimportant sketchy lines.

Awesome work. This just shows how much of an eye you have for design. I don't think I could've pulled this off as well as you managed to.
I agree with you on favorites. I like the underwater hats and the aristocratic boat cracks me up as well. The unhealthy spoon is funny too. Plus the small tidbit of the border and the corner graphics really make this a total piece. Their minor details, but they pull the whole thing together well.
Glad you could share this bit of classwork with us, even though I realize it's not much of a design spectacle. Good to see practice though.

What an interesting twist on a project .. looks fun to actually make and the lot of 'em came out great to boot. Sweet inkering work. Though, if I were to point one thing one, it would be that the "suspicious salt-shaker" isn't suspicious enough .. maybe that's what makes it so suspicious though .. that it's now suspicious.

Well, I did two versions of the saltshaker. One was what you see on the image, the other was similar, but more paranoid-looking. Between the two, I felt this one looked suspicious. I mean, when you're suspicious of something, you don't want people to know you're suspicious, so you kind of sit there nervously looking back and forth while trying to look cool.

I have a couple of unhealthy spoons. Cheap plastics+microwave=never good. Great job tho, I wish my Drawing and Paint for Communication Arts Students classes were that cool. Ok, I don't have any, but if I did, I'd want them to be cool.
