Description
"Calling for Extraction"
LRRP (usually pronounced Lurp) Teams in Vietnam were usually made up of Special Forces, Rangers, and Navy Seals and conducted deep recon patrols in the DMZ and behind enemy lines. As no camouflage was issued regularly in use at the time, team members were authorized a budget with which to purchase uniforms from other sources.
As a general rule, out in the field, the uniforms worn by LRRP and Special Forces teams were stripped of all identifying markings, crests, and unit patches. Team members would keep separate uniforms with the markings intact that were worn when on base or in rear areas when not out on operational assignments.
The most sought after was "Tiger Stripe", made locally in South-East Asia for South Vietnamese use, but members of these teams would also purchase commercially available camouflage from sporting goods stores back in the states. They would also often buy uniforms from other sources in the region.
Weapons were also commonly a mix of WW2, and current issue, and included enemy weapons as well as those in standard issue to US forces. It was not uncommon to see M-16's along side WW2 rifles and SMG's, and AK-47's or SKS rifles... or even British or French weapons!

I'm not sure if SEALs serve on LRRP missions, SEALs tended to do work along the rivers, or embedded inland, i may be wrong as i can't recall the name of the book i heard this from (The idea SEALs weren't LRRPs i mean)

The SEAL teams did tend to work independently from the other Spec Ops types and did serve more often with the Riverines than the others, but from what I understand they did also co-operate on LRRP type operations as well...
Similarly, the Green Berets operated more with the Montagnards and Strategic Hamlet operations with the ARVNΒ for counter-insurgency, but again from what I understand co-operated with LRRP type Ops...
I also know that the CIA was involved in some of the Spec Ops preformed in 'Nam and would either join in, or pull resources from, where ever they needed them (as well as having their own clandestine troops/mercenaries) for operations. CIA would sometimes use an existing operation to hide their own Ops as well...
I think it depended a lot on where the LRRP was going to operate and what the objective of the Recon was... and who was available to form up a team, specially earlier in the war... I know the LRRP teams became more formalized later on and were reformed as Army Rangers type units (which if I recall is where they are now in terms of organization for the modern army). At least that's my understanding of how it worked... Early in the war it wasn't entirely uncommon for Regular Infantry to take part in LRRP's though that changed later on when more specialized units became available...

The Seals didn't start till '62, but the Green Berets were in there quite a bit before that, and the Army Rangers as well. Spec Ops units formed the core of most of the early advisory teams sent to Vietnam before the war had fully begun. Some Green Berets were in Vietnam while the French were still there in the late 50's...
Β After the process of "Vietnamization" started (the switch over from US forces to the South Vietnamese after '71), the LRRP Rangers, Seals, Mike Force (Marine Force Recon), and Green Berets continued combat operations as MACV/SOG Advisory teams while the Regular Army withdrew... So essentially they were there first in, and last out. SOG also ran Ops into Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Southern China/North Vietnam. SOG was reorganized into STDAT around '72 which continued the operations carried on by SOG previously...
I tried to get the image as accurate as I could with what was available to me...
