Description Also called the Southern Mammoth.
This species evolved from the earlier Mammuthus rumanus and lived from the beggining to the end of the early Pleistocene from 2.5 million to 800,000 years ago. It is distingushed as having larger molars with 12-14 ridges where the earlier species had 8-10. It was one of the larger species being about 13.1 feet at the shoulder and had an estimated weight of 11 tons. It also lived in a relatively warm climate being found in southern Europe and during a warmer period. This indicates it likely lacked dense fur. It ate grass and leaves, it would later evolve into a dwarf form on Crete while on the Mainland it would gradually evolve into the Steppe Mammoth.
