Hey, I'm new to 3D modelling, can you tell me where you used Zbrush in this scene, and why did you use Mental-Ray instead of Maya built-in render engine? (I never even heard of Mental-Ray, would like to know what makes it better)

TheSphinx In reply to briancvpa [2015-01-18 21:09:32 +0000 UTC]

Hello,
I used ZBrush only for the curtains. Rest of the scene was all modeled in Maya
As for the renderer, well, I'm not saying mental ray is better. It kind of depends on your needs for the scene you're rendering. I'd suggest you google about that for further information as I am not an expert on this matter. Appart from googling, maybe it's also a great idea for you to try them on a scene and see for yourself what one of them offers you that the other ones don't, or what limitations they have.
Hope I was useful

I googled it for a bit, but it's for autodesk products, I use blender

Thanks for the information anyway

*flops over*
I'm learning how to use Cinema 4D in my graphics course and I have trouble making an okay toaster.
And then there's this!
HOW
I COULD NEVER
I've been getting so fed up 3D modelling, I just UGGGGHHHH
How long did this take?! It's spectacular!Β

Just remember that persistence pays in results!

Making use of the tons of free tutorial content on the web helps immensely!
Some of the best tutorial series I've ever seen are on 3dbuzz.com, but there are many others like 3DLabs.com, 3dtotal.com, cgarena.com etc.

Once you find a tutorial creator you like,
stick with them and you'll learn fast!
a creative mind is a terrible thing to waste !

Heh, I sorta got stuck on the lackadaisical attitudes of Buzz and the guys that helped throughout some of the VTM's. I mean some of their jokes are kinda corny, but it helps to keep the mood light hearted - instead of a droning narration that lets you fall asleep.

I usually have my game soundtracks playing low anyway, just to keep my attention focused on the tutorial content, without too much background noise I'm not familiar with!
I don't know how much research, or that you're aware of all the different methods for learning - but many people really learn in totally different ways from each other, but naturally for expedience sake most schools still use the same methods for all students usually!

Anyway, Cheer's & GL with finding just the right narrator!
I need to fix some issues with my GFX card drivers again! -.-

A mix of book and video will usually work for me.

Takes time, but sadly, the course has moved on and now we're not using C4D anymore.
I'm considering finding some good free 3D model software, so I can get better.

There's a lot of them online for sure,
it just depends on your preferences -
and workflow habits, as to which one
you'll finally pick to be creative with!

Hahaha Β
Well, I started it in April, finished it in January, so it took around 9 months, but with many pauses along the way, and only worked on it on my free time, which isn't much.. you can take a look at the [Step by Step] on facebook, maybe it helps you understand how the image evolved
Thank you very much for your comment and for faving! Β
