In my headcanon, I like to think that the strange lion is Zira's older brother. That he was the heir to his father's kingdom. That is until the king died and they had to move on to a new land where Zira was betrothed to their prince. The Strange lion's name would be Ajouba meaning strange but could also mean exotic, extraordinary, fantastic, funny or mysterious.

Ajouba always plotted to ensure his rule, even when they had moved to a kingdom where he would not be king, the plan was to be trained as an advisor until the moment he could attack and seize power.

Zira naturally adored her brother, even after she realized his intentions toward her betrothed. For you see, she did not care for the young lion she was force to marry and would much rather be with Taka.
