Dear the French/ Maurice Leblanc,
Arsene Lupin!! Where have you been hiding this beautiful man from me my entire life? I finally started on the short stories and they’re so fun!!
For all the other naive classic-lit fans out there, Lupin is the original gentleman thief and basically a reverse Sherlock Holmes (I also love the stories bc you can just feel the author fan-boying over Holmes, who totally makes unsanctioned cameos). The stories are mostly presented as mysteries but it’s more of a how-did-he-do-it? than a whodunnit? and Lupin is such a lovely character; an eccentric romantic lady’s-man showmanship-crime-master who likes to pretend that he doesn’t know stealing is a bad thing and (mostly) uses his powers for good and okay I’ll stop now I just want to say it’s great stuff.
p.s. In my quest for literary gentleman thieves I tried Fantômas first; do not make this mistake, Fantômas is a total jerk/ straight up murderer
