Description There have been many tank engines in the show, Thomas and Friends; most of them are used for shunting, while others have their own branch lines.  No matter what jobs they do, they should never be underestimated, as by the end of the day, they are all really useful in their own ways.  And here, I will be going over my top 10 favourite tank engines from Thomas and Friends.  These are all MY personal opinions, so don't be too mad if any of your favourites didn't end up on the list, okay?

But first, here are some honourable mentions:
Harvey
Sir Handel
Toby
Bill and Ben
Luke

And now, onto the real list.  Full steam ahead!

10: Nia - I know there have been people who dislike Nia purely for taking Edward's place in the Steam Team, while others dislike her for... reasons I refuse to bring up.  Regardless, I still love Nia for how helpful she is, as she was one of the biggest highlights of the BWBA film, helping Thomas getting to certain destinations, and was the kind of friend anyone would want to have.  And she's quite clever as well, figuring out certain solutions like making a funnel out of leaves and using a big wheel like a lighthouse for Harold during a blizzard.  Nia just had to be on this list for those qualities alone.

9: Arthur - Some of you may not know this yet, but Arthur is my favourite character to be introduced in Season 7, always was and always will be.  He is just such a cool character, even in his first appearance where he had a "Spotless Record" which eventually got ruined in an accident.  And he happens to be fond of fish, as his favourite place happens to be a fishing village, and I was happy for him when he got a branch line there.  Such a shame we never got to see him in the CGI series; I feel he had potential, just like a lot of characters who never appeared...

8: Skarloey - Ah, Skarloey; the number one engine on the Narrow Gauge Railway.  He was quite old, but he never gives up on any kind of job, which is why, like most fans, I had a lot of respect for him.  This was shown in "Four Little Engines" where he still tried to get his passengers to the station despite having a damaged spring.  How can you not respect a guy like that?  Sadly, he hit flanderization during the New Series era where he would do things no old engine should ever do, but when the Narrow Gauge engines return in the CGI series, he went back to his true persona, even acting more like a leader to the other Narrow Gauge engines, and that made me happy.

7: Duncan - And here, we have my favourite Narrow Gauge engine.  Duncan is just so cool, with the Scottish accent and a cool design.  He can be quite reckless at times, always acting before thinking and not listening to others' advice, and he can be quite grumpy and complain a lot when things don't go his way.  But in the end, Duncan still proves himself to be really useful and he does have a heart.  Hell, even during the New Series era, he still had some of the best-written stories out of all the Narrow Gauge engines, which is something.

6: Theo - This may seem like a strange option to add since he's really a railway traction engine, but the wikia says he's a tank engine, so let's just go with that.  I know Theo only had one appearance, which was Journey Beyond Sodor, but he was such an adorable and relatable character, that I just had to add him this high on the list, as well as my top 10 favourite Thomas characters in general.  He tended to stutter in his sentences, and he had an extreme lack of confidence in himself due to his awkward design.  Who cannot love a guy like Theo?

5: Duck - Now this was a fairly obvious choice to add on this list.  Duck was such an iconic character in my childhood; he's a hard-working Great Western engine who liked to do his work without fuss, and prefers to do things the Great Western way.  He runs a branch line near Bluff's Cove, which is called "the Little Western" due to it being run by Great Western engines.  And while Duck was absent during most of the New Series era and the first four seasons of the CGI era, it was awesome to see him back for good in Season 17, and he had loads of appearances since then, which I really enjoy.

4: Percy - And here we have another obvious choice for the list.  Percy is just such a popular character, no doubt the second most popular after Thomas.  He is Thomas' best friend and they work so well together.  He may be rather cheeky, but he's still a hard-working engine when it comes to delivering goods or shunting.  His favourite job is pulling the mail train, always delivering letters and parcels during the night.  He can be quite scared easily due to being young, but he knows when to be brave, best shown in Tale of the Brave where he was the main star; gotta love Percy in that one.

3: Rosie - Out of all the characters who made their first appearance in the New Series era, Rosie has always been my favourite, as well as my favourite female character from this franchise.  I mean, how can she not?  She's such a cute tank engine!   And I found her admiration towards Thomas rather adorable, even going as far as to ship the two characters together.  I always enjoyed seeing her onscreen, even cameos during the CGI series, even though she should have been given more lines during the Brenner Era.  And even when her colour paint changed from lavender to cherry red, she still remained the cute tank engine I know and love, and she always will.

2: Oliver - Oliver has been a favourite of mine ever since I got into this franchise as a child.  He was a Great Western engine trying to escape being scrapped with his brake van, Toad, and was helped out by Douglas, which was such an epic scene, and it still is.  Since then, he helps out Duck on his branch line, which is why it's called the "Little Western".  I always loved seeing episodes with Oliver in them, such as when he pulled Scruffey apart to get the trucks to behave and when he found an old house when he was pulling the mail train.  Like a lot of good characters, Oliver was absent throughout most of the New Series era, and the first for CGI seasons, and while I liked seeing him return in Season 18, I would have loved an Oliver-centered episode at least one time.  Yeah, that's how much I love Oliver, but there's still one tank engine from this franchise I love more...

1: Thomas - I know, I know, this choice was predictable, but if you ask me, it's predictable in a good way.  As I've mentioned before, Thomas is my most favourite fictional character of all time.  Ever since I got into the franchise as a young child, Thomas has been such an inspiration to me.  He's a cheeky and fussy tank engine who started out as a station pilot, but after helping out James in an accident, he proved himself to be such a really useful engine, that he was rewarded his own branch line at Ffarquarr.  Since then, he's been running the line with his two faithful coaches, Annie and Clarabel.  And while he can still be cheeky, he's a friend to almost everyone on Sodor, which is rather nice.  And while not all his appearances have been perfect, especially during the Nitrogen Era, I still enjoy seeing Thomas onscreen.  And that is why he's not only my favourite Tank Engine, but my favourite fictional character overall.

And there you have it, my top 10 favourite tank engines.  Feel free to let me know in the comments who your favourite tank engines are, and until next time, hurue!
