I decided to actually do mermay this year! But with a bit of my own twist... As an excuse to do concept art for my story, The Heavens' Proxies which has a lot of diverse species, including mermaids, I want to explore :3 I'm determined to do all days of May wish me luck XD
To help with that tho, most of the drawings are going to be a certain amount of messy. If I were to make ALL of these fully rendered scenes I'd never get them done @ v @ it is concept art anyway so it's more to just get my ideas onto a canvas.

Now information time for anyone who likes world building nonsense! For the first couple drawings some of this will be copy pasted as is relevant so I'll section it off so no one has to read the same thing over and over if something is copypasted XD

General Mermaid Information ==> The basic mermaid outline in this world is that all mermaids are technically women, but a number of these mermaids are actually hermaphroditic and take the role of the males in terms of reproduction. They're referred to in mermaid culture as "Empresses" while female mermaids are referred to as "Queens". All young are called "Princesses". There are three different kinds of "mermaids" in the world, tropical mermaids, which are the more traditional, attractive looking mermaids, deep sea mermaids, which are more monstrous and vicious mermaids living in the deep ocean, and finally Amphibious mermaids which are odd, more humanoid mermaids that actually have permanent legs and live in swamps but are still considered mermaids in this world.

Tropical Mermaid Information ==> Tropical mermaids have the largest population compared to the other two kinds. They are defined from being sociable and living closer to the surface and land. They can also breath air along with having gills. Tropical mermaids have a survival tactic they've evolved that if they remain on land long enough, their tail will transform into legs. Mermaids naturally don't know how to walk, these legs in nature are just used to help propel themselves back into the water to make sure they aren't beached. It's a rather uncomfortable transformation but can save their lives. Of the tropical mermaids there is a WIDE variety of subspecies that have evolved. The four main ones are Island, Night, Arctic, and Lake. Tropical mermaids actually have a behavior very similar to lions. An Empress will have a territory that they defend (Empress's usually are built with more muscle and look larger and more masculine then queens). They will try to win over wandering queens with a varying number of tactics depending on the Empress. If they decide to stick around they'll live in that Empress's territory helping hunt and raising any young the pod might have. The Empress's job is to hunt when they see an opportunity but mainly to fight off any competitors or predators who want to steal the territory and their queens, and/or hurt the queens and young. A weak Empress is seen as unattractive among mermaids. They raise the princesses as a group and once they reach a certain age they'll leave the pod. New queens will leave to find a new pod, and new empresses can either fight their mother for the territory or go find their own. (Mermaids also have a bit of an instinctive distaste for Empress's who want to take the role of Queens. Submissive empresses are often seen as weak and defective in mermaid culture)

Night Mermaids ==> Also known as "False Deep Mermaids" for being occasionally mistaken for a deep sea mermaid by sailors in the dark, Night mermaids are more commonly found in the west where there are more sheer rocks, cliffs, and open water. They're nocturnal and are defined by having dark colors with bright accents and more practical fins and such. Night mermaids actually have the highest threat of being attacked by deep sea mermaids then the others do based simply on the fact that they have to travel further for food. Because of this threat, even queens have evolved to have larger claws and more athletic bodies to defend themselves. They're much more built for fighting and are easier to provoke, along with hunting larger pray. A whole pod of them could take down a whale together. When impressing queens, Night empress's typically prefer to show off their strength by providing a gift to them of a large fish. By also living near cliffs however, Night mermaids also often interact and fight with coastal harpies that hang around and hunt by that water.
