Description I decided to actually do mermay this year! But with a bit of my own twist... As an excuse to do concept art for my story, The Heavens' Proxies which has a lot of diverse species, including mermaids, I want to explore :3 I'm determined to do all days of May wish me luck XD
To help with that tho, most of the drawings are going to be a certain amount of messy. If I were to make ALL of these fully rendered scenes I'd never get them done @ v @ it is concept art anyway so it's more to just get my ideas onto a canvas.

Now information time for anyone who likes world building nonsense! For the first couple drawings some of this will be copy pasted as is relevant so I'll section it off so no one has to read the same thing over and over if something is copypasted XD

General Mermaid Information ==> The basic mermaid outline in this world is that all mermaids are technically women, but a number of these mermaids are actually hermaphroditic and take the role of the males in terms of reproduction. They're referred to in mermaid culture as "Empresses" while female mermaids are referred to as "Queens". All young are called "Princesses". There are three different kinds of "mermaids" in the world, tropical mermaids, which are the more traditional, attractive looking mermaids, deep sea mermaids, which are more monstrous and vicious mermaids living in the deep ocean, and finally Amphibious mermaids which are odd, more humanoid mermaids that actually have permanent legs and live in swamps but are still considered mermaids in this world.Β

Tropical Mermaid Information ==> Tropical mermaids have the largest population compared to the other two kinds. They are defined from being sociable and living closer to the surface and land. They can also breath air along with having gills. Tropical mermaids have a survival tactic they've evolved that if they remain on land long enough, their tail will transform into legs. Mermaids naturally don't know how to walk, these legs in nature are just used to help propel themselves back into the water to make sure they aren't beached. It's a rather uncomfortable transformation but can save their lives. Of the tropical mermaids there is a WIDE variety of subspecies that have evolved. The four main ones are Island, Night, Arctic, and Lake. Tropical mermaids actually have a behavior very similar to lions. An Empress will have a territory that they defend (Empress's usually are built with more muscle and look larger and more masculine then queens). They will try to win over wandering queens with a varying number of tactics depending on the Empress. If they decide to stick around they'll live in that Empress's territory helping hunt and raising any young the pod might have. The Empress's job is to hunt when they see an opportunity but mainly to fight off any competitors or predators who want to steal the territory and their queens, and/or hurt the queens and young. A weak Empress is seen as unattractive among mermaids. They raise the princesses as a group and once they reach a certain age they'll leave the pod. New queens will leave to find a new pod, and new empresses can either fight their mother for the territory or go find their own. (Mermaids also have a bit of an instinctive distaste for Empress's who want to take the role of Queens. Submissive empresses are often seen as weak and defective in mermaid culture)

Lake Mermaids ==> (Also referred to as lake gremlins by me exclusivity) are a very... unusual variation of the tropical mermaids. Lake mermaids or "freshwater" mermaids are a much smaller, hyperactive mermaid that live primarily live in lakes and large ponds. They're typically green or even brown in color with thinner hair but very strong claws and teeth. While they bare the most resemblance to Night mermaids, their energy is more comparable to a kitten then a lion. They're extremely fast and energetic and are quite opportunistic hunters eating bird, fish, turtles, ducks, etc. They also have quite the attraction to shiny objects and are infamous for stealing people's jewelry if they bring it too close to the water. When impressing mates, they prefer to show off all the shiny things they have. They LOVE to rough house and play and can often end up covered in small scratches from wrestling. Not much is actually known about how they find other territory when they become of age... While in obvious theory is they simply use rivers to travel to another lake, some people rumor they are the only tropical mermaids that learn how to walk and actually use their legs to find their own territory or a new pod. They're a very odd subspecies.

The gender seems to be ambiguous, as the face is somewhat masculine, but the body shape is feminine

Lake Mermaids seem fairly similar to the ones in Harry Potter. Intentional, or coincidence?

Hmm, interesting! River-Merfolk are called Selkies in Wizarding World fiction, and like here, they tend to have green skin and hair, sharp teeth and claws, and tend to be more reptilian looking than their warmer climate cousins. Tropical Merfolk tend to be the beautiful, Disney type sirens, but for some reason, colder climate merfolk tend to be less human looking.

I like the different species of merfolk, especially the tropical ones. How long do your merfolk live?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheZodiacLord In reply to GalacticNightSky99 [2019-05-05 17:05:26 +0000 UTC]

Tropical mermaids live for about 40-60 years. The main reason for the large gap is since many will die unnaturally (from a fight with a different mermaid or animal etc) but they can live up to 60
Deep sea mermaids are estimated to live between 30-50 and Amphibians only live to about 30-40

Based on the TV Trope "Five Races":Β  tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php… What kind of race would you consider them (Mundane? Stout? Fairy? High etc.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheZodiacLord In reply to GalacticNightSky99 [2019-05-06 07:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Hm well of mermaids as a whole I guess fairy would be closest out of the five?
In the world they’re in elves and humans are considered equal in terms of civilization and progress (humans being more skillful with tools and more physical while elves are the more mental and passive) while all other species are typically smaller in population and less technologically advanced. To even go further into that some species more resemble humans (Orcs, satyrs, amphibians to name some) and some resemble elves more (Imps, fairies, tropical mermaids etc)
