Description Found this while cleaning up my WIPs and decided to finish it. The backstory is this:

"When Harry Potter managed by some miracle to not only kill the basilisk in the Secret Chamber under the school, but survive the encounter, too, everyone viewed him as a hero. The same people who had accused him of evil only a few short days before were now congratulating him. They appeared to have forgotten why they'd shunned him in the first place - him, the Parselmouth, the boy who could talk to snakes.

But Harry hadn't forgotten. He remembered their cutting words and distrust. So because he hadn't forgotten, he chose to forget to mention the egg. A beautiful leathery-skinned egg of impressive size, hidden in the Chamber for Merlin knew how long. Harry had found it, he'd been drawn to it, like a moth to the flame. He knew what it was - of course he knew. But it was only a baby, not even hatched yet. And he realized, if anyone learned of its existance, it would be destroyed. The thought saddend him. And in an act as foulishly couragous as his Gryffindor heritage demanded he hid the egg and later returned to retrieve it.

At first he was uncertain about this decision, but the sickenly false hero worship he was met with after the basilisk's defeat strenghthened his resolve. Tom Riddle had ordered the now-dead basilik to be a monster, maybe he could raise a different kind of snake. He had to try at least.

It wasn't easy. Some of his friends had to learn of his secret sooner or later. But Harry's hope proved feasible - the Basilisk became a pet, then a friend and companion and eventually his most trusted confidante. And it certainly came in handy against the Dark Lord when he eventually rose again.

So, no. Harry never regretted his decision to safe the egg all those years ago. And one day he would sit by the fire with a giant serpent curled around him and tell his grand-children of the adventures of the boy and his basilisk."

Well, this is it - my personal HP AU. I always thought it was a pity that Harry's Parsel ability wasn't explored in more detail. Just imagine how cool it would have been for him to have a pet basilisk!
So, if you like the idea and are a fanfic author, please feel free to view this as a challenge. I'd love to read a story where Harry raises a little monster snake.

The picture shows Harry in his 20s and the basilisk looks the way I imagined it looking, not the way the movie depicted. I didn't like the movie version much.
