Yeah actually. Do let me know how that goes. I love PA, and considered going there for my masters, but I don't think they do masters programs, or if they do, it wasn't in my field. SCAD is so expensive though D8 be glad

What did you want to major at SCAD? if I haven't asked already XD I think I did talk with a representative online, but they didn't have what I was looking for sadly

Sounds very cool! I reckon the best route to take is what market you really want to try to make it in, business wise. Film, I imagine, would be the most profitable depending on the courses you take, and Game programming would be most useful too!

You're too kind. >.< I think my gypsy costume is far better than my absinthe fairy, but it will improve with time, money and many many sketches. XD

These are great concepts to understand, and then re-shape in your own way. Art should never be done by the book, but this is a great tool for those starting.

Hmm good tips, gonna help with panel layouts in the web-comic I'm doing. I was also wondering if you know anything about the animation program at SVA. How similar it is to sequential art, etc.

ThirdPotato In reply to cosmiclemur [2011-11-18 20:27:31 +0000 UTC]
I don't know much bout SVA. I went to SCAD. But animation and sequential arts are to entirely different beasts. Though they both borrow from the same concepts of art & design the actual career path is worlds apart. Sequential arts is all about visual story telling; how to convey story through composition, script writing, panel layout, body language etc. Animation is a focus on the movement of a character in a given space. As for the career, sequential can be entirely self-run like a webcomic or self publication, or even working for a small publisher where you do everything from the sketch, inks, color and lettering. Bigger companies in sequential will hire you as one position: penciler (sketcher), inker, colorist, scriptwriter or letterer. Animation is never a one-man show. It's not what you want to get into if you want to "see your characters come to life." It's a group project, and you'll often be animating one tiny scene in an entire movie. You follow the character desingers' models, and nowadays 2D traditional is minimal to none, so you'll be working with 3D models, moving points on rigs, working in a graph editor and more. If you're a hands-on art person and love working in any medium from paints to inks to digital art, sequential is the way to go, especially if you feel like sharing your art expression with the world. Many will argue so dont take this next phrase to heart, but animation isn't where you go to be "famous for your art." With the exceptions of the very few who stand out and make a name for yourself, animation is entirely synnergetic, and its not what you want to go into to stand out or express your artistic opinion. (ugh I'm going to get SO flamed for that comment XD. Disclaimer: take it with a grain of salt)

Hmm, insightful,
I plan on adapting a story idea I'm developing with my friend to animation in the future.
Or I could simply keep it in sequential art form.
Thank you for your response, regardless.

You're most welcome; I would keep it sequential. There's more to animation than it would seem at first, and there's so much you can do with the sequential form that can't be done with animation (and vice versa), but I find the still form of comics to be more in control. (augh XD also probably going to get flamed by animators for that. Just keep in mind this is from a comic-biased person XD)

Excellent work. I don't do comics, but this is still crazy useful... and you never know. I might end up doing comics. Stuff like this inspires me.

Thanks so much for all the comments!! And yeah, it's kinda fun to see how different art medias can blend so well together. A lot of film/cinema goes into the visual arts as well, so you just never know. XD

Sounds awesome n.n Well comics isn't something you need to go to school for! You can learn the same things in all the books. School helps to get feedback and critique, mentorship and inspiration of other artists, but DA creates that great environment well if you know where to look n.n Best of luck to ya!
