Description Panspermic echinoderm/pterosaur chimera from a lower gravity mega-tidepool world at the periphery of the exclusively terrestrial seeding zone. These things use their sails to roll them along the surf like organic Strandbeests:

(Yes, I know the sails should be larger for this purpose--that's part of the reason I invoked the low-g conceit.)

Do you think those guys are just horsing around, or are they castaways who rafted in to shore on a Sailstar drifting, Velella/man o' war -style, with the ocean currents...?

Yeah, I know, crude sketch--I've had a rough time getting this one onto paper, but I wanted to give the idea some exposure. Will Scrap soon.

Holy crap, that is such an awesome idea!
Before reading the description, I was assuming that it was actually an artificial organism created as a sort of person and cargo transporter but after reading it, I interpret it more as an organism from a dried-up world that evolved to live on land as the waters evaporated, using their sails to propel them across the salt flats in search of water... but this is probably influenced by JG Ballard’s Vermilion Sands which I recently readΒ

How I can't believe I have never seen those things before. The way they work is mechanically amazing.
