Description I figured I'd never get around to inking this, so here's the sketch for you guys to be amused with. If I do ever ink it, I'll post that up.

Yes, those people in the dresses are Mello and Near from Death Note. I drew this the same day as Sweet Lolita Near .

The dresses are of my own design; Near is a sweet lolita and Mello is wa-loli (traditional Japanese or kimono-style lolita.)

Mello and Near are from the anime/manga Death Note, and belong to Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

Mello doesn't look too happy about being put in his outfit! Near looks so adorable in his outfit! I really like your designs!

Mello was probably just mad that Near got to be in the foreground while he was in the background! Sorry, Mells, it's composition--the taller person fits better in the back so that we can see the shorter person, LOL.

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-07 03:22:06 +0000 UTC]

the haircut, and the style of clothing...and his eyes too. Some consider them feminine. -_-'

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2009-03-07 03:23:59 +0000 UTC]

He can't really help his eyes...some people say that he wear eyeliner, but I think he just has blackness around his eyes as a way to make him seem a bit more L-like.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-07 03:40:22 +0000 UTC]

They are very small...I think that's what makes them seem feminine as well. They are small compared to L's and Near's anyway. I do not think they make him look feminine. I believe it's his clothing and his haircut personally.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2009-03-07 03:44:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh! They're actually pretty large, especially when he opens them wide like he does when he's thinking, but I think I know what you mean. His eyes are noticeably slanted, which gives the illusion of extra eyelashes or even cats-eye makeup on the upper corners of them. A lot of beautiful women, like the princesses in the Disney movies, are drawn with a slant to their eyes to emphasize this, so it's come to be interpreted as a feminine look.

I think it just makes him look interesting--his eyes are much more slanty than L's or Near's, making him stand out, and yet he has the most Caucasian-looking coloring of the three. One fanfic plot of mine theorizes that he's half-Korean, half-Russian to account for the slanty eyes and coloring at once.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-07 04:57:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that slant of eye...even half Russian, lends itself to be the Korean slant. I personally think Near's eyes are the closest to Korean in the entire series. I'm not saying that because I'm Korean and wish to draw one more similarity, but if you examine the shape of the Korean's eyes and then look at Near's, they are more similar than Mello's. I think Mello's eyes (because they are lifted slightly at the corners) are closer to Chinese eyes than Korean eyes. Koreans don't have the small lift in the corners like Mello has.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2009-03-07 05:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Hehe...well, it's all up to interpretation of course, but here's a model who is half Russian, half Korean: [link] and here is a comparison pic of Mello: [link]

The levels of eye-slantiness don't seem THAT far from each other. I'll bet genetics probably make the slantiness more or less pronounced, also, depending upon how much Korean and/or Russian ends up in the features. Anyway, Mello's eyes slant a bit more or a bit less depending on the picture of him and the angle he's shown at, but I don't see his eyes are super-slanty, just definitely more almond-shaped.

Then again, you would know about how slanty or not-slanty Korean eyes are, LOL.

Ah, I love speculating about this kind of stuff...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-07 05:52:34 +0000 UTC]

I don't think he could be. I would say that particular model got a lot more Russian looks than Korean.

Ah, the levels of eye-slantedness. You must remember the history of the asian cultures...the dominance of one culture and attempts at assimilating another. It happend several times throughout their histories, so yes, they will look very similar. Not to confuse you more or anything, sadly.

And randomly in that pic of Mello...is it just me, or is one of his sets of beads missing a few? It looks short to me, but then again, that could be angle.

Also another random note: Mikhail is a Russian name meaning "One who resembles god" -_-' (Like I said, RANDOM)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2009-03-07 06:04:25 +0000 UTC]

LOL; don't worry, when things confuse me I'm just more determined to learn to understand them. (Well, except math. I stopped attempting to understand it a long time ago. )

I think Mello's beads look odd because in the anime they made most of them white rather than the original all-red from the manga. That, and his black glove is in the way of the right side (our right, not his) of the necklace, so against his black vest it might look like beads are missing.

LOL; yes, Mikhail is a Russian name, but apparently Mello's name, Mihael, is Slovakian. More food for thought.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-07 06:14:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind math. It is not my best subject, but it isn't so bad. I'd rather be writing a story though!

Nah...it's not the color that is odd. It's the amount. You can see between two red beads, but there are only a few beeds there, as poosed to the full count. That might be angle, but I just wondered if they didn't bother to count them and just drew.

It could be Slovakian, or from Croatia...if you want to be general, from the middle of Europe, not the orient at all. I've never felt that he was Russian really. That's possibly why I don't see many similarities between the phto of Mello and the photo of the model you showed me.

Also, Mello = someone Hitler would have loved...blonde haired, and blue eyed -_-' 'nother random thing -_-'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2009-03-08 05:00:57 +0000 UTC]

XD I really hadn't connected Mello and Hitler in a conversation until now...LOL. Math only seems bad to me because I just plain can't wrap my brain around what the instructions are even asking me to attempt. I don't understand it, like looking at text in another language written on a page. It's extremely frustrating, because in almost everything else I've ever tried, all I had to do to understand it was to try harder. With math, the harder I try the more incomprehensible it seems to become. >>;

I have no bias about where Mello is or isn't from. So in one fic he might be half-Russian, half-Korean, and then in another I could turn around and make him somebody who was born right there in England. It's more fun this way!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-09 01:06:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow...I feel oddly special, and sort of creeped out. I mean, I've never connected them in a conversation either, until now.

I guess I'm not like that. I can wrap my brain around most everything I've ever come in contact with so far in my life...it's just the preference for some subjects over others I suppose.

I guess that's why it's fanfiction y'know? I don't have a bias as to where he is from either, though it's fun to actually discover something similar in real life. It's only insulting to people if you assume that what's on the page is the true make of people, with the exception of well researched stuff of course! (An example would be like saying "All Koreans are short" when they aren't...y'know?) I suppose insulting is a strong word to use. Maybe...irksome and bothersome would work better. I hope you understand what I'm trying to (and failing to) say.

I understand what you're saying, don't worry. I agree! Sweeping generalizations aren't good to have in anything, really.

You are lucky to be able to comprehend math. I have to finish two more math classes in order to get my college degrees, and I only barely passed the last one I did by the skin of my teeth. >>; With much tutoring that I've since forgotten. x.x;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2009-03-09 01:54:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you understand me! Sometimes I wonder if I'm making any sense to people!

Math is just...being able to analyze numbers and understand how certain factors make the numbers do different things. I guess that's the analytical side of me kicking in...letting me do math. -_-' What math did you last take?

I bet you just need to be taught in a more...creative veined way, if that makes sense. It's not changing what the numbers do (that can't be helped), but it might bring the numbers closer to your type of preferred learning? I'm not sure what type of tutor(s) you've had (the (s) is in case there wasn't just one...more for other years maybe?)...I'm sure they were really good at math though. But that might just be the problem right there. I'm all for new methods of teaching/learning, so this sort of interests me in the weirdest way probably.

...I'm at a loss for words...

This is really well done, and your description of the colors makes me want to see you color this one. Their expressions are perfect, they really portray their characters through their faces and fashion. Speaking of which, your fashion has always been amazing on these characters. I find myself eagerly awaiting what you might put them in next.

Keep up the good work!

Threshie In reply to gakusangi [2009-02-27 01:33:59 +0000 UTC]

Aww, it's not THAT great...I didn't post it for about a week because I wasn't happy with how it turned out. Just describing the colors made me want to color it, though...so I probably will ink and color it anyway. Who knows, maybe inking it will help fix some of the parts I'm not happy with.

As for Wammy's boys and fashion, next up is Near in a teddy bear hat. I drew him today, but no scanner 'til tomorrow.

Threshie In reply to gakusangi [2009-02-27 02:08:20 +0000 UTC]

The first copies of The Slayers first season I ever owned were all VHS in dub. I'm not surprised that a subbed tape got mixed in with the dubbed ones, though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gakusangi In reply to Threshie [2009-02-27 20:14:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I mean, the case and everything matches up with the others perfectly, so it's almost like it was done intentionally. And given the series, that might very well be the case.

Lain's pretty good little anime, only about thirteen episodes long. Her character would interact with the Wammy's really well, since she's pretty odd herself. It's the story about how the line between the internet and the real world is beginning to disappear, and people with a profound connection to the internet are finding that they can do the same kinds of things in the real world now.
