Description I'm doing a lot of these lately to practice painting techniques...this one was referenced from [link]
by *rammkitty-stock (she's got a lot of good costume photos too)

I was going for a sort of 60s vibe...the picture itself isn't that odd, but what I took from it turned into something vaguely unsettling, somehow

You need to stop being this awesome Li, seriously, not fair. Did you learn some of this stuff from school or are you self-taught? Because honestly I'm jealous. *plots against you, something involving camels maybe*

thundercake In reply to Eshva [2007-04-30 16:46:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm in art school, yeah...but in the past year my classes have been mainly about things other than my major (due to screw-ups) so I've had to crack down and focus on teaching myself through creepily observing strangers.
Also, conceptart.org helped me a TON...I'm seriously amazed at how much it's helped me improve.

Conceptart, really? I've been too intimidated to go there much ha. >_> Are there online tutorials or something I've missed there? Anyhow thanks for telling me ><

They're really nice...most of the professionals post in the finished section, but the sketches and critique center are great for people around our level. They have whole sections full of tutorials and advice and you can talk with people who work for game industries or publish their own comics (they have a lot of Marvel/DC people). Plus, no one gets bitchy if you give them honest feedback >.>

Goodness gracious... this is stunning, darlin. Holy socks.
Your strokes are so strong and so soft at the same time. I'm really, really impressed. Her eyes and her skin and the depth to her entire face... it all just pulls you in. Those lips are amazing. Damnit, quit bein so awesome! You're makin the rest of us look bad!

D: Thank you!

secret: this is messy to the umpteenth degree. I actually lasso'd and moved the eyes around like 50 times. I'm surprised no one pointed it out >.>

y2jenn In reply to thundercake [2007-04-30 18:10:25 +0000 UTC]

But I like that it's messy! I love messy paintery work. It looks good, it really does. Don't get me started on how many times i've had to lasso tool eyes and move the buggers around.

she looks like she just saw something she shouldn't have.

I've been trying to do a digital painting but it's getting nowhere fast so i give you a lot of credit for it looking that good.

Really? I need to work on my painting. Maybe I'm too anal about it. I did a self-portrait in Painter like this and it took me forever.

I've never used painter...it looks sweet. Like, you can get realistic impasto in Painter, somehow... I saw that in the magazine and was like "holy shit! technology is awesome!"

I love the details in the eyes, though the one farther away lacks the form definition that the closer one has. The nose looks great and the tones around the eyes work well to make the form. The lips are great in the middle but loose a little bit of their punch towards the left top edge. It looks like you were trying to keep it loose to not make the lips too separated, but I think it looses the direction a little bit because of it. Over all it's quite stunning. :3

thundercake In reply to SarahForde [2007-04-27 17:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the critique my dear...you are completely right, much punch is lost. The entire left side of the piece gave me trouble. I may update this at a later date.

you know what, no. i'm stupid.
that comment up there is...

this is just entirely too awesome to be left with just that little piss puddle of a statement.

maybe it's the almost blotchy painting style, or maybe it's the lovely way your painting gives it that extra UMPH that creates that next dimension. it looks very real (though you can tell it's not, obviously).

she's lovely and you did such a wonderful job of capturing her shocked (or is it startled?) expression.

you can do the one thing i can't so well it's...well, it draws me in. as an "artist" (so i should dare call myself that), there's one MAJOR concept that absolutely escapes me. depth. i couldn't simulate depth with any degree of believable skill if i tried.

Your painting is good. Is the salmon-coloured stuff a background or a veil?
