My first Angel x Grace foal.

A continuation of this piece: [link]

Heheheh...

It was a rocky two weeks. For eleven years, Angelousse and Grace had eaten together, played together, slept together, never parting from each other's side. They shared the same stall and paddock, the same feed troughs and water buckets. One did not even need two lead ropes to move them. Just harness one up and the other was sure to follow.

Eleven years of unwavering loyalty and love. And it was love. Just looking at BCC's "married couple" made the most cold-hearted cynic believe. They were so wrapped up in each other, it was almost like they were one entity. It had been many years since one was mentioned without the other in the same breath. Names weren't even used much any more. They were simply referred to as "the couple."

"Bring in the couple," a hand would say. "It's time for their dinner." Or, "Here's the couple's vaccines, they're due for them." And our favorite, "The couple is pregnant again."

When we heard that phrase for the eighth time, we grinned and celebrated, for this foal would be ours.

Five weeks before Grace's due date, we weren't celebrating anymore. "She's on the ground and isn't moving," TJ said worriedly into the phone, having to raise her voice to be heard over Angel's frantic trumpet calls. Dr. Travis Mason, their on-sight vet, hurried over from his apartments over the medical facility. One quick glance at the downed mare, and he had an ambulance whirring to the nearest equine hospital minutes later. "I'm not taking any chances," was his parting explanation.

This was the first time Grace had ever stepped hoof off BCC land, but the dire circumstances of her leaving were not what brought tears to the staff members' eyes. It was the mournful wail of a certain black stallion as he stood watching at the fenceline. As if his wings had been shorn, Angel did not move from that fenceline overlooking the road for fifteen days. A few nibbles of hay and a sip here and there of water kept him standing, but by the end of the two weeks he was naught but skin and bones.

Doc Mason wiped his brow wearily with the back of his hand and stepped out of the trailer cab. It was over. Done. Thank God. He glanced toward the nearby fence rail and shivered under the soulful blue gaze staring back at him. "Just a few more minutes, boy," he crooned softly. He could tell Angel tried whickering in reply, but nothing more than a pitiful croak emerged from the stallion's raw throat.

Reaching the back of the trailer, he unlatched the metal bar, smiling softly as he saw Angel's black head bob in the corner of his eye. Mason lowered the ramp and crooned to the tiny creature inside.

Blinking rapidly as the sunlight hit his sensitive brown eyes, the premature colt glided gracefully out of the trailer. Angel's ears flew foward and his nostril's flared, happily familiarizing himself with his son's scent, but those baby blues remained fixated on the trailer.

Mason chuckled. "You're too smart for your own good. Or perhaps too hopeful." Opening the trailer doors wider, he stepped back. No lead rope was needed to guide Grace back into Angel's figurative arms. A loud shriek burst from Angel's weary throat as he slammed his chest against the fence hard enough to bend it forward. The colt startled and tried to slip under Grace's legs, but the thin mare was already slipping through the gate, leaving him scrambling to keep up.

Many yards away, Rafe grasped TJ's hand and smiled with relief before turning to Mason. "How did you manage it, Doc?" he asked in wonder. "Last we heard, she was knocking on Death's door."

Mason shrugged and tipped his head toward the colt. His little tail wagged happily as he nursed, his parents cooing softly to each other overhead as their necks entwined. "That little guy there is your miracle worker," he said. "I swear that foal brought her back from the brink and reminded her she had something to fight for. I think it's his voice." He chucked. "Kid shouts just like his daddy."

Name: Savior
Barn Name:
Gender: Colt
Projected Height: 15hh
Color: Dark palomino
Eyes: Brown
Markings: Blaze, four white legs
Build: He has a thick, stocky body, despite being ridiculously premature. His legs, while not ruler straight, bend nicely like his sire's, and though his head is a tad too large for the rest of him, he is all in all a decent looking horse.
Breed: Thoughbred
Bloodlines: Angelousse x Blind Grace
Genes: ee/aa/nCr
Temperment: Though heartbreakingly shy around other horses--his sire and dam aside--Savior is not afraid to let his voice be heard. Vocal to the point of obnoxiousness, he has an opinion about everything and lets you know it. He more than makes up for his height with the attitude of a king used to getting what he wants, but he has a heart of gold. Savior is the apple of his sire's eye. Despite them both being male, Angel has yet to show the dislike most stallions feel for their male offspring. Instead, he hovers over Savior, constantly guarding the tiny body and doting on the colt almost as much as he dotes on Grace.
Stable: Black Creek Crossing Stables
