WOW, just beautiful! Have you tried using a very sturdy interfacing for the wings?
Again though, this plush is flawless. You've done such an amazing job on her, and I'm actually really loving the all white look. : )

I love those big ears! So cute!! Yes, minky is rather pleasant to work with after tackling flannel but you pull off both beautifully! Great job!

Did you attach the wings within the dart on the front body piece? I'm working with flannel and having a hard time attaching the wings without it being ugly, haha.

Yeah I used the vertical dart on the front piece instead of the spine seam as suggested by valleyviolet's original instructions. How is it ugly?

My hand-sewing isn't the prettiest, and I was afraid to use the machine on that spot. I ended up going with the spine seam but it just doesn't have that same "look" that attaching at the dart seems to. Do you have any closeup shots of how you attached yours? Any tips?

sorry I've been holding off on a reply because I wanted to find time to do an illustration to show how I did it. Thought a description would suffice though - I just attached perpendicular to the dart, then sewed the dart up with the wing root sandwiched in it. You'll be doing this before you start sewing the body pieces together, so you'll have the wings dangling inside until you turn the body inside-out.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I ended up attaching at the spine but I'm going to redesign the wings entirely on my next pony. Here's my first attempt:

Guh, I'm not sure about my suggestions because they make the wings stiffer. Not necessarily more upright. The other suggestions sounded good.

Looking good! Huh, I can only take a wild stab at how to prop up wings and guess that either you can put some stiff interfacing into the wings, or do some kind of quilting technique or experiment with different kinds of stuffing. Or use what the use in quilting, which is batting... or both batting and interfacing.
I think she looks wonderful. I want to put a crown on her head and give her a royal cape so I can say she's cosplaying the White Queen or something. XD

I actually already have 3 layers of thick embroidery stabilizers in each wing's top section (I tried going for full structure but it was hard to coax it all through the small opening at the end) and that still didn't work. Batting sounds like a good idea but I'll have to find a way to squeeze it somehow.

Tenebrian In reply to thurinus [2012-08-07 06:44:17 +0000 UTC]
I'd have to ask my mother about batting. She's a quilter and they use the stuff all the time, but from what I've seen it would be sewn into place when you sew the two halves of the wing together (assuming it's two halves). It doesn't get squeezed in. Over stitching keeps it in place and prevents it from bunching up. (I think that's what it's called).
The only other plush-makers I watch that might have ideas could be or - Don't know if they are available for questions. Either that or , but her plushies are more humanistic.

wow, she's absolutely gorgeous!!! definitely one of the best fluttershy plushies I've ever seen. awesome work!!!
concerning the wings, have you tried to stuff them a little bit with some filling and to step the "inner wings" then afterwards? in my experience this works very well - the wings are perfectly standing and you won't need any wiring.

thurinus In reply to Siora86 [2012-08-07 05:26:51 +0000 UTC]
I've not tried filling/batting, but I did put a spar of 3-layer laminated embroidery to the top of each wing, but that didn't do much good. I wasn't so sure about putting stuffing into the wing because I was afraid of inconsistent thickness, but I could give it a shot. Thanks!

Siora86 In reply to thurinus [2012-08-07 10:40:13 +0000 UTC]
you'll get better results when you put not that much stuffing into the wing at once but some in each "feather" after another before stuffing the rest of the wing. then the filling is everywhere equally thick. after sewing the "inner wing" on it the stuffing will be perfectly held in place and the wings stand quite good then.
If you'd like to take a look on some plushie's wings i'm actually working on for inspiration, they are made with that technique without wiring: [link]
