Description ... or "she's-all-white-because-I-only-had-white-minky" Fluttershy . My first pony made of Minky! I had to use needles to pose her wings because they'd droop otherwise anyone know how to prop wings up without wires?

I've found Minky to be a surprisingly pleasant material to work with. It doesn't fray like flannel, and the pile smoothness and elasticity of the fabric make turning pieces inside out through narrow openings surprisingly easy. I did have some difficulty with ladder-stitching since the pile obscures the actual fabric, but I'd imagine that just takes some practice.

Hey thurin us, sorry if I spelled it wrong, anyway in hardware stores you can actually get wire with a plastic covering and just safety bend the ends so it does stab, I find that it helps me a lot with my old posable plushies that I never uploaded to here due to losing them when I moved DX but take my word for it, it's pretty useful for pose-ability, flexibility and strength

I use extra firm fusible craft interfacing on one side of the wings to give it that extra stiffness to help mine stand up a bit, makes it a pain in the arse to turn but once its done it turns out nicely

WOW, just beautiful! Have you tried using a very sturdy interfacing for the wings?
Again though, this plush is flawless. You've done such an amazing job on her, and I'm actually really loving the all white look. : )

how beautiful she is! all white!! if you add a little something like a pink butterfly on her mane or a pink scarf will do the trick, this is such a good idea that Disney already worked with it on Christmas they released this "snowball" plushies, they were all white wish a few details on a pastel color [link] [link] (KGrHqN,!n8E9eM1Zk3FBPdeIjd2Jw~~60_35.JPG [link]
i loved the idea and got Dumbo for myself, maybe you can do that with the main 6? orange for AJ, blue for RD and so? that would be awesome

thanks! yeah the blank look does invite a bit of accessorizing. One of my friends brought those Disney dolls up to when I posted this, I guess that charm is shared too. As for doing it for the rest of the main 6 - I'll probably gun for proper colours before being adventurous with variants

Did you attach the wings within the dart on the front body piece? I'm working with flannel and having a hard time attaching the wings without it being ugly, haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thurinus In reply to audioclass [2012-08-08 22:47:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I used the vertical dart on the front piece instead of the spine seam as suggested by valleyviolet's original instructions. How is it ugly?

audioclass In reply to thurinus [2012-08-09 00:36:21 +0000 UTC]

My hand-sewing isn't the prettiest, and I was afraid to use the machine on that spot. I ended up going with the spine seam but it just doesn't have that same "look" that attaching at the dart seems to. Do you have any closeup shots of how you attached yours? Any tips?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thurinus In reply to audioclass [2012-08-13 04:47:32 +0000 UTC]

sorry I've been holding off on a reply because I wanted to find time to do an illustration to show how I did it. Thought a description would suffice though - I just attached perpendicular to the dart, then sewed the dart up with the wing root sandwiched in it. You'll be doing this before you start sewing the body pieces together, so you'll have the wings dangling inside until you turn the body inside-out.

audioclass In reply to thurinus [2012-08-13 05:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I ended up attaching at the spine but I'm going to redesign the wings entirely on my next pony. Here's my first attempt:

I did it due to circumstances, but you're right, it does have a certain charm to it.

Freakin' love your work, by the way . Your pattern feels so neat and seamless, and your use of joints gives it a certain character (what's the proper name for those sockets?). Would love to see your take on differently coloured ponies!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hystree In reply to thurinus [2012-08-08 00:04:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it almost feels to me like a marble sculpture, or actual work of art for a gallery, which is a neat contrast to the actuality of soft and fuzzy cuddly plush :3 It's inspiring anyway.

Awww thank you ) my pattern started out quite strange looking, but it's gotten better, haha. Um, the neck joint? I just call it a swivel joint.. not sure if there's an actual name for it. The pieces are cardboard disc and cotter pin though.
Yeah I'll give it some thought!

Tenebrian [2012-08-06 22:28:48 +0000 UTC]

Guh, I'm not sure about my suggestions because they make the wings stiffer. Not necessarily more upright. The other suggestions sounded good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Tenebrian [2012-08-06 22:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Looking good! Huh, I can only take a wild stab at how to prop up wings and guess that either you can put some stiff interfacing into the wings, or do some kind of quilting technique or experiment with different kinds of stuffing. Or use what the use in quilting, which is batting... or both batting and interfacing.

I think she looks wonderful. I want to put a crown on her head and give her a royal cape so I can say she's cosplaying the White Queen or something. XD

thurinus In reply to Tenebrian [2012-08-07 05:24:12 +0000 UTC]

I actually already have 3 layers of thick embroidery stabilizers in each wing's top section (I tried going for full structure but it was hard to coax it all through the small opening at the end) and that still didn't work. Batting sounds like a good idea but I'll have to find a way to squeeze it somehow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tenebrian In reply to thurinus [2012-08-07 06:44:17 +0000 UTC]

I'd have to ask my mother about batting. She's a quilter and they use the stuff all the time, but from what I've seen it would be sewn into place when you sew the two halves of the wing together (assuming it's two halves). It doesn't get squeezed in. Over stitching keeps it in place and prevents it from bunching up. (I think that's what it's called).

The only other plush-makers I watch that might have ideas could be or - Don't know if they are available for questions. Either that or , but her plushies are more humanistic.

wow, she's absolutely gorgeous!!! definitely one of the best fluttershy plushies I've ever seen. awesome work!!!

concerning the wings, have you tried to stuff them a little bit with some filling and to step the "inner wings" then afterwards? in my experience this works very well - the wings are perfectly standing and you won't need any wiring.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thurinus In reply to Siora86 [2012-08-07 05:26:51 +0000 UTC]

I've not tried filling/batting, but I did put a spar of 3-layer laminated embroidery to the top of each wing, but that didn't do much good. I wasn't so sure about putting stuffing into the wing because I was afraid of inconsistent thickness, but I could give it a shot. Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Siora86 In reply to thurinus [2012-08-07 10:40:13 +0000 UTC]

you'll get better results when you put not that much stuffing into the wing at once but some in each "feather" after another before stuffing the rest of the wing. then the filling is everywhere equally thick. after sewing the "inner wing" on it the stuffing will be perfectly held in place and the wings stand quite good then.
If you'd like to take a look on some plushie's wings i'm actually working on for inspiration, they are made with that technique without wiring: [link]
