3dsmax9, Vray + PhotoshopEDIT: Tried to fix the apple inside of the bottle to blend in better..

EDIT: I'm in the process of re-rendering this scene with up-to-date quality settings and more resolution.
I lost the original maps though (I do make backups, but for some reason these maps weren't included in them... grrr) so the updated version might look quite different in a positive way, I hope.
Also, thanks for everyone who posted constructive criticism and ideas for improvement. I'll take them in consideration when updating this
UPDATE!: Re-did the textures, made various fixes and rendered bigger. I hope you still like it!

This is almost perfect. The apple and the bottle are just fine the way they are. I think the "arm" of the corkscrew ought to be lowered ever so slightly so that it's in contact with the red cloth (it looks just a little like it's floating). As far as the cork goes, I think the texture needs to be more "holey" and not so fine. Just my two-cents. ^_^ Keep up the good work!

It's freaky how close 3D can get to real life. It's a great composition, but then you realize, it doesn't exist. Great job on this. The line between reality and rendering is just that much thinner now.

Wow! I am absolutely amazed by the photographic realism you've achieved with all the reflections and such. But I am even more impressed with your composition and artist representation of it all, truly shows there's more to your talent than basic 3d skills!

It's inside the bottle. I'm actually rather confused how people can see it as a reflection
Gotta try to improve on that once I get the time & motivation to redo this..

Reminds me of the pear in the bottle. Where they to get the pear in the bottle they put the bottle around the pear on the tree before it grows then later put it off and the pear is in the bottle

It's not a secret. After all, I've learned a lot from other 3d artists on the internet so I'll gladly pass the information along
There's 3 important things about glass materials:
- Refraction: set the IOR to 1.5-1.6
- Reflection: fresnel with the same IOR as refractions
- Fog: green to cyan with a very small multiplier (increase for colored glass)
Then there's a few things to increase realism e.g. dispersion if your renderer supports it [link] a very small bump to make the surface a bit less uniform, fingerprints (reflection glossiness slot) and dust (scatter + tiny renderable splines with a blurry refraction shader).
The enviroment of the glass object is important too. For clean renders use large area lights for nice reflections. And don't forget to switch caustics on

Oh, so that's what I've been doing wrong. I've just been dropping a reflect/refract map on it and fooling around with reflection dimming and specularity. Um. I just recently started learning how to do glass and metal textures and stuff. Up until now I've mostly focused on modeling and animation. Thanks for the tip.
